SIG has saw fit to enter the AR market starting this year. They have two lines, the SIG 516 in 5.56x45mm NATO and the SIG 716 in 7.62x51mm NATO in various configurations. Both designs use a pushrod gas piston system with 3 position adjustable gas valves. The gasblocks appear to be standardized across the range of models, is skeletonized, and as a M1913 rail on top to extend the rail beyond the free float tube. Barrels across the line appear to be chrome lined, cold hammer-forged free floating barrels.
SIG 516
The SIG 516 come in the following models: PDW (178mm barrel, 2.75kg), CQB (254mm barrel, 2.9kg), Tactical Patrol (368mm barrel, 3.15kg), Patrol (406mm barrel, 3.3kg) and Precision Marksman (457mm heavy barrel, 3.65kg). All barrels have a 1:7 twist, and the M4 contoured, except for the PDW and Precision, which are heavy barrel. Carbine models come with a milspec diameter buffer tube and SOPMOD stock, whereas the Precision model comes aith a Magpul PRS stock and 2-stage match trigger.
Other standard features across the range include ambidexterous safety, and free float M1913 quad rail.
SIG 516s are supposed to hit LE this summer, with civilian sales to follow. The 14" model was quoted in the range of $2000 USD.

SIG 716
The basic design of the 716 seems to be an upsizing of the 516, with the same kind of block, rails and stocks and gas system. Although the press packet says "standard M14 type steel magazine", we were told by the SHOT rep that the magazines were actually Armalite AR-10.
The 716 is currently "in development", with the following models on display at SHOT
14" Tactical Patrol

Sig has new pistols coming out this year based on P226 and P229, but features a new frame incorporating a reduced backstrap and grip circumference. The grip is a modular one pliece screwless design and features a new texture. Frame redesign includes reduced trigger reach, redesigned decocking lever and the Short Reset Trigger as standard (trigger used previously in the Sig Elites).
Other standard features include, SIGLITE night sights, integral acessory rail.
MSRP is $1,149 USD and they now ship with 3 magazines.

On a personal note, I own a SIG P226 Elite, and I found the controls and DA pull to be be easier to reach even with the medium grip.

That bolt carrier is very different, does the gas tube extend far into the upper receiver?

I'm more interested in the new 1.1-8 Leupold scope mounted on that gun.

It's definitely getting better press than their last attempt, the 1.1-4x...that just got eaten alive. This one is getting a lot of favourable discussion I notice.

Yeah, as I'm sure you've already seen, there was a really good write up on m4c.

Yeah, that was very interesting...especially after that 1-4 they put out which was really panned. I was surprised to see the positive review of the 1-8.

Did the Sig rep mention anything about when we might might expect to see the new 226 E2's in Canadian stores?

Umm so why did they go with the Armalite mags for their AR-10?
I have an Armalite AR-10 and the biggest weakness are the magazines. The mags on my DPMS LR-308 are superior.

Yeah, I'm surprised to see they haven't jumped on the PMAG-LR bandwagon with KAC et al.

Sorry. Haven't had enough time to spend much time on the forum. The glass seems really clear and eye relief is generous. The illumination is very bright and it seems that it would be a good daylight scope at 1.1x. Leupold didn't give any clear release date or price point. There were several of these scopes at SHOT and we were told they were all prototypes.
I don't have the pamphlet right now, but the models shown appeared to intended for .308/7.62 NATO platforms, using a Horus reticle.
I try to post more when I get home if anyone is interested later.

We had a discussion with Leupold rep at the show. The scope is in development stage so a price is not set yet. When they asked us what we think the price should be, we told them it should be about 1200USD.......i

About damn time they updated their P226 line. Sick of seeing "special" models that have a decal on them.
I'd like to know if those new p226 grips fit the older model :)
At least one source reported that the new grips will fit the old frames, BUT you will need a new hammer strut and other internal parts.

Here are some specs Leupold gave us at SHOT. However, the units were all prototypes and the design and specs may be different on the production models. Sorry for the poor focus.
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4065/4296193025_6bd6009512.jpg
The main design features is the 1.1-8x magnification in a 34mm tube, which is adjusted by the huge tube which extends from the magnification ring back. This allows the user to use the entire hand to crank the magnification. The scope is equipped with M118 LR (175 grain 7.62 NATO) BDC dials, which are designed with a quick-change capability. Adjustments are down by pinching the knob, and turning the dials to avoid accidental adjustments, and has 0.10 mil adjustments with 10 mil per revolution. The reticle is a front focal plane Horus H27. This thing is much bigger than the compact Nightforce scopes and weighs 647g before the massive mount.
Other specs include:
Linear Field of view (ft @100y): 92.0-14.7
Linear Field of view (m @100m): 31.0-4.9
Exit pupil (mm): 8.0-3.0
Weight: 23.2 ounces, 657 grams
Length: 11.75 inches, 29.85 cm
mounting space: 6.5 in, 16.5 cm
Objective aperture: 24mm
Eye relief: 3.7-3.3 in, 93.9-83.8 mm

It is a first focal plane - which means it is like the SHOT dot - the recticle appears to be bigger when the magnification is cranked up.

Hey Folks...just got back from SHOT show myself...great show overall.
Greentips...did you happen to get any pictures of the new SIG 556 - the ones I took were pretty blury. This is the gun that I am pretty excited about seeing in Canada...hopefully they'll come out with a 18.5" barrel version (hopefully the same for the ACR).
I think my favourite gun at the show though was the Stoeger Side by Side defense :)

I think a response to being told that optic should be at the $1200 price point would deserve the same kind of treatment that was given at the LaRue booth.
My response would have been to laugh and turn and walk away while muttering something under my breath about airsofters.
