Thanks for checking into that. Either was is fine, I just wasn't in the know of which mag to use with the 5.45x39.

This is a novelty without cheap surplus to go with it.

I'd love a 5.45 kit for my XCR, but not if it costs as much as Wolf or Tulammo .223 to shoot it.
    Whatever

I wouldn't say it's a novelty, there are lots of people who don't shoot surplus 7.62x39 through their rifles, they go with the hornady or the MFS etc. It boils down to what each person wants or needs this caliber for.

I don't shoot corrosive surplus out of my XCR, and with the real non-corrosive surplus gone, the choices are somewhat limited. Barnaul (~33 cents a round), MFS (~50 cents a round).

Wolverine's price on the Hornady ammo isn't bad - in line with .223.

If you have an XCR in 7.62x39 and want a bit more accuracy, I could see going for this over .223 - the advantage being it will use the 7.62x39 AR mags.

Having said that, cheap non-corrosive surplus would make it awesome.

"Some oppose registration of guns or licensing of gun owners because if captured, the associated records would provide military invaders with the locations and identities of gun owners, simplifying elimination of law-abiding (i.e. patriotic) resistance fighters. Location and capture of such records is a standard doctrine taught to military intelligence officers; and was widely practiced by German and Soviet troops during World War II."

You're right. But 5.45 isn't significantly different from .223, performance wise. Without something to differentiate it from .223, it seems somewhat pointless.

That said, if we didn't face the Canadian price penalty for new production 5.45 (available in the US for under $0.30 a round), or had surplus 5.45 available for under $0.20 a round, I'd be all over one of these uppers.
    Whatever
