Just like the Gen 2 Folding Stock Adapter, the Gen 3 is not intended to be fired with the stock folded. There's still a warning visible when the stock is folded. When the stock is folded, the bolt carrier is prevented from moving backwards by the retention tab on the button. Firing the Gen 2 would cause damage to the tab and other components as the tab would take the full brunt of the rearward movement of the carrier. The Gen 3, however, can be fired without undue damage as the whole adapter is now made of steel instead of aluminum, and the thick O-ring on the carrier extension absorbs the force of the carrier. The O-ring itself will sustain damage but it can be replaced. The second shoulder on the extension acts as an additional safety measure should the first shoulder and O-ring get past the button tab. Firing with the stock folded is only for emergencies. The rifle will not eject the empty case and the user will still have to rack the charging handle after the stock has been unfolded into the firing position.
