We are starting to work on pricing for our Modern Varmint rifle and figured we would ask for some feedback on some of the options we are considering offering.
Just to clarify we are NOT considering piston systems, chrome lined barrels or different trigger packs, period.
1) Is there demand for a coated bolt to ease in cleaning as some claim the coated bolts do? The basic rifle will employ a high mass black oxide finish bolt .
2) IF we opt for a coated bolt do we go nickle/chrome or TiN?

I'm happy with the black oxide on my M.H.. It's not important to me.
I wouldn't bother. Black oxide is fine.
I've heard great things about Nickle-boron but never experienced it personally. Black oxide gets the job done from my experience!

Extra coating costs too much. Is the internal of carrier coated in chrome? That's the biggie.

All of my own ARish guns have standard black oxide finish surfaces, but I use an ultra sonic cleaner to keep them clean, so the fancy coatings on the external surfaces I have little experience with, hence asking the question.

Of those choices, I would vote Chrome/Nickel. Despite it's advantages, definitely not TiN as I find the gold garish. Either keep it in regular phosphate/oxide or go for a silver or black coating. Fortunately there's a bunch of options such as CrN, CrAlN, TiAlN, and DCF. All have the high surface hardness, long wearing life and increased lubricity found on high performance cutting tools, and they're either silver or black!

I am fine with the standard black oxide finish as well. I haven't had any issues with my MH with close to 1000 rounds through it. Murphy's law: if it ain't broke don't fix it.
Too expensive for what it is IMO .
