That frame will last one shooting sesh before its cut into peices by shrapnel

But nice cheap frame I did the same at first but got tired of rebuilding them.

Don't cut your hands on the sharp copper jackets that will be stuck in the boards everywhere

Get yourself some rubber. We use old conveyor belt to line ours. Makes it last a "little" longer.

As Aviator says, find some old used conveyor belt, cut it and screw it to the inside of the frame, covering the wood.
We have done that to all our shrouds and find it lasts for several seasons of Cowboy Action Shooting.
Have a look at our website, www.ovmcowboys.ca and you'll see some examples.

I've heard strips of conveyor belt works well for haning gongs , basic rubber bungy straps also work fairly well. Your chain set up could be simpler with less opening links.
Bolts through the gong hole with nuts and washers on the back side to attach the chain would be cheaper then replacing shackles
Our Government trusts rivets more then law abiding gun owners.

Another option I've seen is fire hose or old tie-down or lifting straps to hang the gong. You can shoot them full of holes and they'll keep hanging where as one or two hits on the chains and you're hiking out to rehang the bell. I've done that a time or two, still using the old chains though because I still have a bunch of short scraps laying around.
