Just curious on what would be the best choice for hunting partridge I have a 3in 12 guage pump. I don't want to go buy the wrong ammunition for it.

Number 6 or Number 7 lead...
Thats if lead is legal to use in the area you intend to hunt.

You can shoot 2 3/4 inch in your shotgun. 5, 6, 7, 7.5 any of these will do.
I use number 4 or 5 2 3/4" 11/8 load. I prefer shells with less shot I don't like to fill the birds up with lead.
