What do you guys use the radios for?

I have one, I bought one just to listen, but I've got no real use for it >,<

Hiking, camping, gopher shooting, 4X4ing, driving on the highway with 2 vehicles so the ladies can decide where to pull over, kids on their bikes, and for SHTF scenarios.

I have three 2-3 watt UV-3R mini radios (gave 1 to my father in-law), a GT3 (gave to my father in-law), and two 8 watt UV-5R plus radios, battery eliminator, external mic, programming cables, 3800 mah extended life battery, external magnetic vehicle antenna, high gain antennas, cases.

Still learning how to use them, but I have lent to many outdoorsy friends for testing, all who have used them, love them.

I work forestry. The road channels for knowing the Km of logging trucks. The company channel for talking to the crew (very rare to have cell phone coverage). Marine 6 and 16 for boating.

Other options are at least ten times more expensive and have to be taken in for programming at around the price of one of these each time.

Haven't had this radio very long but so far a very useful tool.

For any outdoor activity these are great. Hunting hiking camping fishing boating skiing/snowboarding...

If you set the UHF channels to the 469Mhz range you can use the standard FRS channels. Then others in your group who have the "walmart" or Canadian tire radios can communicate with you.the retail ones are only 1watt so the Baofeng range is much greater.

Usually to call in and flirt with Zero.

But I doubt these Baofeng's will do that.

The purpose of requiring fixed antennas is to make it difficult to attach an external antenna
that would allow use of high gain antennas.

But neither Industry Canada or the FCC seem to give a #### about keeping these freeband radios off the airwaves
