    Unhappy roll my own

Returning to firearms after 40 years away - semi-retired and living mostly on N Vancouver Island with trips into AB.

Have chosen to specialise in single shots - currently I have a Baikal single shot .30-06 camp rifle and a bottle of powder - enjoying the thought of rolling individual non-lead copper ammo 2x or 3x cartridges at a time from 110gr to 220gr for a relaxed shooting experience as I dial in various loads for short distance "bush" hunting etc

I prefer to not store live ammo long term as I spend time in larger centres where theft can be an issue so the "makings" have more sense to me rather than storing completed "rounds" . Roll my own imbues a sense of patience in what should be a leisurely preoccupation.

A friend in the Victoria area introduced me to the gunnutz as I have been disappointed with behaviours and ethics seen elsewhere on the shooters web. Although I will give a shoutout to the Alberta and Alaska outdoors groups for running a relatively tight ship.

I am currently exploring the histories of various long rifle calibres and learning an amalgam of 19th and 20th century knowledges and experience that can be extended into the 21st century where everything seems upside down and backwards to the wisdoms of old. It is fun and challenging to reinvent an old passion in a contemporary and rewarding way.

Welcome aboard! Hopefully you will enjoy reloading as much as I do. I also load 30-06 for the Garand and the 1903A3.

Thanks RC - just using simple lee classic reloaders - one for .30-06 and one for .30 carbine - with a barrel insert the Baikal becomes a .30-30-06 carbine. The tricky point is finding .308 100gr all copper RN or equivalent for the .30 carbine insert.

The California Rules are starting to bite now and a lot of new stuff is starting to arrive from the TTX, tt-tac, GMX, eTip offerings etc.

Non-tox-copper seems to perform better at 90% grains with 100% conventional loadings. At least that is the gossip. Some of the 300 blk bullets might work but that is the fun of it moving forward and getting the loads right.

And part of geezer gunnery is using geezer calibres.... Bring on the .22 Hornet...

    Thx CRogers

I am currently in CR with a slight friendship connection with the rifle range up here - they pride themselves as more target and less hunting. I like the physical situation on Comox Lake for the Courtenay club - even performed there for a wedding under the "antlers" a few years back - any thoughts/ intros re the Courtenay club? I met the new caretaker a while back and may do another look around in a while. (PM privately if you wish)

Right now I am preparing to go sniffing around Tahsis for a week or two. (no cell towers available and limited wifi = my kind of perfection)

A recent trial visit to SalmonBeach around the Barclay Sound was beautiful but unlivable in my circumstances - the last windstorm that didn't happen would have literally flipped 30 foot caravans at my spot in the SB townsite. There is a history of trailers/ roofs etc flipping in winter storms. The next 4x west coast winters are going to be on the rough side....

Then again I got chased out of AB on Aug1 once - horizon to horizon chain lightning in 100km winds and me being the highest thing around eating hot roast chicken out of a dutch oven.

    much prefer VI
    Steph

Courtenay range is alright, 100 yard rifle range with a 25 to 50 yard pistol range beside it, an indoor rimfire gallery, large trap/skeet and "cowboy action" divisions. I just wish they expanded upon IPSC or the like for us modern-inclined sport shooters, but I suppose we simply don't have the demographics for that kind of thing in the Valley. On a personal note I believe the whole membership thing needs a pretty major overhaul as well, or at least change it so that your membership is good for 365 days after you've gotten accepted rather than only being eligible until the end of the current calendar year. But that's just personal preference.

    Thx for your thoughts

When I went into large city type commercial indoor facilities in Edmonton etc the most common thing noticed was that a lot of individuals should not of been in the room - a hoot rather than a sport and somewhat scary casual. So a small membership base has many pluses as well as minuses in my mind. I have talked with shooters who cannot find the "space" to squeeze a shot off when everyone else is blazing away. So a niche club works for me - just have to find the club.
