Yeah, the xcr is a relatively low bar, but it is on the market, and does work and fit the demographic to an extent. I am sure ATRS can beat it with the right vector if so inclined.

I don't think proprietary parts are a problem, and some of them may be required. That said, it will increase dev costs, so use as much off the shelf as you can.

Frankly, if it works, I'd buy one and enough spare parts to last my offspring.

Great idea and id be in to purchase one. Id love to help design one if you want some free help and/or testing. Im fairly fluent in solidworks, have a small 3d printer (ala reprap), a fullsize CNC RF45 Mill that will be running soon, and live in Alberta

I can provide some solidwork files for reference if you would like

I just bought an XCR for coyotes and love the idea of an accurate 308 to match. Price would be important. I spent 3500 on my xcr with taxes and accessories. so I would be willing to spend around the same for a .308 that was good to go out of the box.

IMO rifle should do away with the ar15 charging handle and go for a side charge (maybe with a paratrooper style fold away - Also allowance for ambi?). Charging handle should dual purpose as forward assist, as many do. Upper and lower receiver should function similar to AR, but not look like too close of a relative. Should operate similar to an AR as in most of the bolt design, but should be bufferless to allow for aftermarket folding stocks (a factory folding stock would lead to less chance of an unrestricted approval). Rifle should come with very very basic furniture (see point above) but be able to use AR pistol grip and allow for AR style quad rail. Rear stock could be basic, with the allowance for an AR buttstock adapter.
