Depending on the gun (regular every day gun) search for it online and see how much they are selling for used. if its an antique of some sort take it to a gun smith to get it appraised

Or, subscribe to the Blue Book of Guns http://bluebookofgunvalues.com/ and mark-up accordingly for exchange rate and availability for the Canadian market.

Ask around. The marketplace is of greater value than a printed book.

The Blue Book of Guns values don't apply to Canada. It reflects averages of U.S. values with zero regard for Stateside regional variations and is at least 2 years out of date. Takes that long to compile and publish a book.
Rummaging around Canadian dealer sites will help, but dealers base their used firearm values on the wholesale price. Be a lot closer than a foreign book though.
Remember that condition is everything. And any modifications done(aftermarket add-ons) mean nothing.
No gunsmiths for antique values. You need an antique firearm dealer, if they are antiques.
