It has been done before, by Ingram. They also made a model in 5.56 and another in 7.62x39 (the former uses AR mags, the latter uses AK mags).
Perhaps this is something North Sylva might consider?
The 7.62x39 looks pretty nice, would need an 18.5" barrel though

That idea crapped out. RCMP determined AIA's are Lee Enfield variants and therefore limited to ten round capacity.
