Unsure of the head spacing, everything I have read says go for it and shoot 7.62 NATO, if I was to spend over $2000 on a riffle I probably wouldn't shoot milsurp if it was chambered for .308. $450 on the M305 I am willing to try the NATO.

Are these of fairly decent quality? as in on par with other posts circa 2012 on M305's
I have done quite a bit of reading over the last few hours about .308 in 18 - 20" barrels, and it seems that there wouldn't been much/any downside to the shorter barrel. I have always liked the look of this style of rifle, so if these were decent, I may have just found my first rifle.

Ideally I would want to use the rifle for targets as well as hunting (considering deer and black bear, possibly wolves/coyotes. With proper ammunition selection, do people feel that might be viable?

I think these guns would defiantly be good for hunting, if the stock is changed that helps with accuracy, as well as some good optics and good ammo there should be no problem pulling off high yardage shots. The US military uses the Springfield version as a sniper rifle.
Took mine out yesterday. Got in in January at Regina gun show, stripped it and cleaned it. Finally a nice day, only -8! Using Mfs 140gr soft points from the bench I was hitting 4 inches low at 100 yds. Right out of the box, zero problems. Soft shooting and just felt right. This is going to be an expensive summer for ammo.
Spot welded does not mean fixed flash hider. Mine was spot welded and it came of very easily. A few good hits with a rubber mallet and it was off.
