so, if they don't take those oddball US mags, and they don't take STANAG mags, what do they take, without the magwell conversion?

    Really?

The extra 1.3" of barrel is way too much ?

I may be wrong but wasn't .223 designed for use in a 20 inch barrel? And work best out of a 20 inch barrel? Again, I may be wrong but 20 seems like a good default setting. Does the short rail have iron sights? Can't tell

    You are definitely right.
The short rail doesn't have any iron sight.

I bought the SL8-4 with the short rail and later bought the long rail with "iron" sights for about $130. Bought the bipod and sling. I regret getting the bag as it is better suited to carrying a guitar. I really like this rifle it shoots very well and cleaning is much easier than an AR15 as it has a piston. This is a really cool varmint/coyote gun. It seems to maintain a zero between rail changes and gives you the ability to shoot both the same day with a quick change using supplied tool. It's my son's favorite rifle. And almost always goes with us. I can live with the thumb hole stock but I wish it had a better graduated sight. Currently it is only 100/300m which I suppose is adequate for most people.
