ATRS "Eliminator" flash hider now with video comparison

I honestly do not know how it would work on a long barrelled rifle, they were designed for short barrelled guns to control the flash.
The weight of the flash hider may mess with the barrels harmonics on a barrel over 16" long?

Was the eliminator designed to increase the back pressure (like the KX3) for short barrels as well? (sorry I'm not as schooled in this brake/FS design as I would like to be) It seems that might cause problems on a longer barrel where BP isn't an issue?

I want something that directs the sound more downrange than an open brake or FH that won't mess with the barrel harmonics...

It was engineered specifically for use on short barreled carbines.
By nature it increases dwell time as all can style flash hiders do.

I mean, so does the A2 - it's a bit more subdued, probably because of a camera difference - but the real Spex I've got on one of my shorty uppers doesn't come anywhere near that much flame. I did my own low-light test (outdoors, not indoors) and the A2 was significantly worse than the Spex using this same 55 grain AE ball.

Was there a change in design or something? I can't imagine that I lucked out and got the only "good" Spex out there that isn't a fire-breathing monster.

You didn't Doc...my Spex was a dead ringer for yours, and if memory serves me correct (which is possibly suspect due to years of aluminum consumption in the Patricias) there was a complete and utter lack of fireball from either of ours.

That being said, the 'Eliminator' is quite effective indeed!

Rick, is this possibly a 1st gen/prototype Spex hanging around your shop that you used?

When we made the original Spex brakes here a couple of years ago there was no internal vortexs engineered into the internals.
The Eliminator employs a much more sophisticated internal design.

I was there when Peter did the original flash test video and was impressed back then with how it worked, hence we started to produce them. I have no idea what ammo he used for the video however and do not believe it was shot in Hi Def. The camera was positioned at nearly 90 degrees to the muzzle due to the facility we had use of.
Between the far more sophisticated camera equipment, video operator and The Calgary Shooting Center's range allowing us more latitude in distance and angles that the camera was used at I think it produced video that is blatantly transparent and informative.

The Spex brake I used in the video we just produced is 1 of the very first 1s we made in 2009, it has seen about 500 rounds of use. Frankly I was surprised at how the Spex brake shot flame down range, I expected it to fare much better in the testing than it did.

The ammo used is the latest run of American Eagle 55 gr FMJ that is selling almost everywhere in 50 cal ammo cans. It is without a doubt the dirtiest ammo and seems to have no flash inhibitors in the powder.
Certainly different ammo will produce differing amounts of flash.

If you are going to the WRAS 3 gun shoot on the 15th I will gladly bring my Spex brake and let you run it against the Eliminator that lives on my rifle. I even still have some of the ammo we used in the test. It would be interesting to see how my Spex compares to your Spex on the same rifle using the same ammo.

Both of you got your brakes from ATRS at close to the same time, they like mine are all from the same batch we made as there only was 1 production run of them made. I don't know if since Peter and Rich left they have made any changes to their copy of this muzzle device or not, nor am I aware of whether they even produce a copy of the Spex brake that was produced here.
