M305 Arrived, great shape, minor issue

First off I'd like to thank you for the rifle, overall it is pretty excellent and I can only see may years of fun coming from it!

The only issue I have is the mag release, the release itself is somewhat smaller than the place it is seated in. This results in a somewhat canted release which will not drop mags unless press a very specific way. I am relatively certain this can be resolved with a bit of filing. Any thoughts?

I think there are over sized mag relase available, but should get more familar with your rifle first. Also, 20-round mags are easier to remove.

Sorry, but even Norinco (or the people selling them) should stand behind the product as far as a no "dead on arrival" policy. He shouldn't have to modify/buy after market parts right off the batt.

OP, it's hard to understand exactly what you are saying...

The M14 rifle was not designed to "drop free" the mag when you press the mag release... Are you expecting the mag to drop free without grabbing it while pressing the mag release & pulling it out of the magwell?

A couple pics would go a long way in explaining your dilemma.

    Cheers

The mags are stuck in there pretty stiff once inserted, it'll take some time to break in and come easier to release. It's more of a holding the mag release and pulling/pushing the mag forward and down. If that's not what you're talking about then I apologize and will see myself out

Battle rifle mags are more or less supposed to be in there semi permanent, filled via clips and removed occasionly for cleaning or replacing.

Why buy a not so well built M-305..,for a third of the price of an M1A I'll take my chances. As far as standing behind their product people just need to insist on the retailer following the law of the land. I would guess that all provinces have similar laws. In Ontario if you sell me something it has to work as intended or we understood it was as is. If it doesn't work as intended you should insist on an exchange for another or your money back. Store policies mean nothing if they are contrary to the law. That said I haven't heard of any retailer refusing to act within the law when push comes to shove re M-305's.

As far as the mag goes, one of the my mags is a bit fatter than the rest. I have one that needs to be pushed out from the top half the time. It use to need to be pushed all the time but I gave it a slight squeeze in the vice and it's better now. If your going to give that a try I'd be careful. It's not as simple as squashing it to what you think it needs as it will rebound to pretty much it's original shape after you release it from the vice. I just gave it a little squeeze, tried it and then a little more till it was better. I didn't get it to the ease of operation of my other two mags but it is better. I was nervous I'd cross some threshold and the mag would squash too far to feed properly.

Sounds like one of the short 5 round mags rather than the as designed 5/20 rounder that you can grab onto with your hand and rock it out? If so that's more an issue with the short mag having been designed for 5 rounds only in a 20 round battle rifle. I also have a short 5 round mag that needs tapping out from inside the gun, my solution was to not use it and buy more 5/20 mags that I can grab onto for a mag change.

Of course you can alway's leave the mag in and load with stripper's.

I took my 5 rounder and drilled a couple holes in the bottom plate and put a para cord loop in it. I don't use it very often but it can be pulled out quite easil now.

Sounds right to me. I have one and find the 5 round mags that sit flush with the rifle are a PIA the remove. They are not like AR15 magazines that "drop out."

Like other's suggested, get an extended mag release if you can find out, or stick to 5/20 magazines which you can get a grip on and pull out easier.
