Hello Ladies and Gents

I'm new to this website and fairly new to owning firearms. I am looking to buy a non-restricted AR style firearm and I was hoping to get some advice on what you guys might think is a good rifle for me to buy. I'm looking for something that's not too expensive to buy and is pretty accurate. Also I would like to buy a caliber that I can take with me to go hunt something a little bigger then a rabbit. My knowledge about AR rifles is almost nothing so all the advise and info that you guys can give me is gratefully appreciates. Thanks

CSA VZ58 .223 with the ar magazine conversion absolutely love mine even though some of the early ones had issues mines been quite well to me. T97nsr isn't bad just has the terrible ergonomics. Those are proble your best options for sub 1500. If you have patients you might be able to find a non restricted ar-108b they usually run around 1500 and are quite collectable. Hope this helps.

Kel-tec Su16 in .223.

Takes AR mags.
Non-restricted.
under 1000 bucks.

Nuff said.

Your choices are pretty limited. XCR M (308) but costs about 2500$ ish. Keltec RFB (308) and about 2700$. Ruger mini 30 (7.62x39) and about 1000$. Lots of cool after market stocks for the ruger as well. Many of the other rifles such as Tavor and XCR-l and type 97 are all .223 (not overly good for hunting).

For simple plinking, you can't go wrong with the ruger sr22. It's Rimfire but has an AR look and takes all the available furniture

Oh yeah another good choice is the norinco m305. It's about 500$ as is. Throw it in an after market stock like the m14.ca black feather for an additional 700$ and you have tacticool 308 fire power. Not exactly AR 15 style but it's modular and will take down a deer like no ones business.

There are no centerfire AR style rifles in Canada that are non- restricted. All ARs and variants ( I HATE THIS WORD) are restricted by our super intelligent gun laws. There are a few non- restricted black rifles that may channel your inner AR which are excellent hunting guns. Robarms XCR, T97NR, Tavor, KeltecRFB come to mind. Most when fully equipped are in the $3000 range except the T97.

Base model is $799 the one in the picture is about $1500 lol

Base model $800, pistol grip + AR stock upgrade $180. Thats under 1k, and I'm sure the OP can figure out that the rest of the add-ons like AFG and optics are extra.

for your stated needs
1) AR style, non restricted
2) hunting something bigger than a rabbit
3) not too expensive and fairly accurate
I would recommend the czech small arms vz 58 in 7.62 x 39 rifle. looks like an ak 47, reliable, cheap ammo even if you get the soft points for hunting. cant really hunt much with a 223 caliber rifle.

You forgot the red lion forend thats another 250. The plastic kel tec forend is 80. Then threading the barrel for the flash hider. I looked into all these mods thats why i ordered the su16fx.

Its still one of his cheapest options for an AR-style NR gun. If not the cheapest.

Hell yeah it is. Its the cheapest one i could find that had all "AR" stuff i wanted. Next thing would be an xcr l but that jumps you to $2500

What about the AR-180b?

It's not restricted and it's a pretty good thing of its sort. It's only in .223Remington, a good varmint cartridge which many jurisdictions forbid for big game hunting.

It has been out of production for years. If you watch the used market diligently you may find one tomorrow or five years from now.

Awesome, thanks for all your input. I really like the norinco m305 with the black m14 stock conversion idea. I'm going to take another look tomorrow at all the options that you guys suggested. I didn't expect to get so many responses so quick. When I do decide to go and buy the gun, are there any stores that you guys would suggest to buy from vs other stores? Would I be better off buying it online?

When you said AR-style, did you mean black/tactical rifle? Because that open's up a couple possibilities. Like the T97.

Ya, sorry. That's what I meant. Thanks for the suggestion of the T97 but I'm looking for something that looks more like an AR-15 or an ACR.

Mini 14 (if you can find a new model one at a decent price), toss a tacticool stock on it to make it look AR-ish if you want.
