my dad came over for a visit and a couple of his little friends made the trip as well.
we have a planned shoot tomorrow at the range so we thought we would tackle it as a father son team.

so i had a chance to sit down and get a good look at his S&W R8 and all i can say is wow is that a nice freak'n gun!

i went and got my Ruger GP100 out and my Ruger SP101 to compare and its not even the same ballpark.... not even the same GAME!
but then the gun is twice the money so i would expect it to be head and shoulders above.

super light and super tight.
i was reading how the R8 was designed for the entry guy on SWAT teams, the shield guy.
that in itself makes it a pretty cool gun.

ill try to get a couple picks with my 2 wheel guns and his R8 and 460 mag when we are doing some after range cleaning tomorow.
ill also try to get some live fire shots from the range if i think of it to compare the 2 357 mags if i can.

well......

i have to say, after shooting the GP100 and the R8 side by side im not sold.
in fact im rather happy it wasnt me that spent $1500 on the R8!

if i where using this gun as a life or death gun for work ok, but for plinking there was no difference in shooting the guns.
in fact i found the extra weight of the ruger to be a benefit when shooting the .357 mag.
when shooting the 38 both guns felt and shot the same.
 
A gent at the range let me try his, a M&P. I fine revolver indeed, that trigger surprised me everytime in single.
 
i was trying to get my dad to let me put the 2 rails on his and i was gonna put my Deltapoint on it and a laser under but he wouldnt let me.
he still babies it.
 
Those look like nice guns, save for that lock they put in it. I'm a little confused, though; why would a SWAT team want a revolver?

Only the entry guy with the shield carries it, shooting either around the sides or thru a port in the center of the shield. With an automatic the slide hits and/or catches on the side of the shield and causes missfeeds and failures to eject that can't be cleared because they're dragging a shield around. The revolver solves that nicely.

I have the 627 stainless version of this revolver. For shooting fast i prefer the extra weight as it comes back onto target much quicker, but if i was carrying i'd prefer the lighter one for sure.

If done properly the cycling slide is a non issue with a shield. Furthermore, the shield man is not the primary shooter, he is simply cover for the rest of the team behind him. The R8 is joke for such a role, the capacity is low, the DA trigger is far from ideal, the back blast via the cylinder gap when behind a shield is a major concern, and the rail is inaccessible to the shooter.

at the end of the day all of the 'made for swat guys' 'tactical' 'sniper' stuff is all just marketing for us anyways.
im sure when my 68yr old dad purchased the gun he wasnt thinking.... "there may come a day when i may get a phone call from the Calgary Police to take up the shield and be the front man on the entry team, i better plan ahead and get a R8 now so im ready!"
he was probably thinking "hmmm i want a nice smith wheel gun but something lighter..... oh look, that one has 2 rails, thats neat"

I agree with the points made, but at least two large agencies in the states adopted it for that role. <shrug> It's their money.
 
Pretty interesting info, I wouldn't have guessed that and it does make sense IMHO.
If ever I end up carying a shield I'll keep that in mind ;)

Not primary shooter = no need for large capacity.

Less capacity, yet each shot is more effective, typical magnum round revolver tradeoff. But see above.

DA trigger on an R8 is better than most striker fired auto's. Heavier but cleaner in every way.
 
Wayupnorth helped me find mine when I posted that I was looking for one. Thanks again! I love my R8 and no, I never put the rail on it. It looks and shoots great as is. Standing offhand, I was getting 4" groups at 25m. And I'm guessing it can shoot better than I can.
