I've heard that a Beretta 96 .40 cal magazine will hold 14 rounds of 9mm and fit & function perfectly in a 92FS/M9 pistol ?

Many years ago I owned at the same time a Beretta 96FS INOX and a Beretta M9.....I remember my M9 magazine fit inside my stainless 96FS ....but I never thought of loading 9mm ammo in my .40 cal mags.

When I think of it....I can't see it happening. The feeding lip of the magazine for the 9mm I would think is slightly smaller.....and if 9mm ammo was loaded into the larger .40 cal 96 mags....I would think the smaller 9mm ammo would just pop right out, and not be held in place by the larger .40 cal mag.

Can anybody take a pic of their 96FS fully charged with 9mm ammo in it....and post a pic of the spin of the mag....showing the 9mm ammo being held in place by the .40 mag ???

I just need to see it for myself....I know I've heard it before, but I just can't picture it.

Not really a huge deal, I just am very curious on how this can be......anybody can confirm this?

Out the different mags I have tried, beretta mags are, by far, the most reliable doing this. I think they taper a bit more than most .40 mags.

Glock mags don't work at all. 11 rounds in and they start to spit.

The factory 10 rounder Beretta 96 magazine holds 13 rounds of 9mm. Didn't have feeding problem -though I did not do extensive testing. If you use the factory 11 rounder Beretta 96 follower in factory 10 rounder Beretta 96 magazine you can get it to hold 14 (you won't be able to insert a fully loaded magazine with slide forward). The using 11 rounder follower in 10 rounder magazine will still holds 10 rounds of 14S&W.

The 11 rounder magazine has a slightly longer body and slightly shorter follower.

It's not 12 or 13 they hold 14 rounds of 9mm. I found this out 8-9 years ago when a buddies 92 was shipped with one 9mm mag and one .40 we loaded with 9mm just for fun.

I have a 92g and two 9mm mags and two .40 cal mags. All mags are Beretta factory mags. The feed lips on my 40s seem ever so slightly wider apart but feed 9mm into my pistol just fine. The only problem I run into is the last round will never feed because the follower by that time is high enough to indicate an empy mag and so the slide stays back. I just need to monkey with it a bit I expect, just have not taken the time. I can confirm 14 rounds of 9mm will fit.

if you convert 9mm to imperial you get .39 which is so damn close to .40 I keep wondering why they even bothered to create that caliber in the first place. (no I didn't check the balistics but I sincerely doubt there could be that much a difference)

9mm=.354"

13rnds of 9mm fit in the 40SW mag comfortably and allows me to insert the mag info a closed slide. 14rnds is pretty snug and I'll have to slap that mag good to get it to seat and then good luck trying to easily work the slide. Inserting into an open slide with 14rnd is not a problem.

Tried .40 cal mecgar in my 90-2 and it ftf every second round. Mag lips need to closed up I think. Legally I cant modify the mag to do it though.

I would like to know if anyone can get their mecgar magazines to work properly.

I'm in the same boat, buying two Mecgar .40 mags for use in a Beretta CX 4 rifle. They don't work any better than in your pistol. The 9mm Beretta mag lips have a tiny taper, from the back to the front, measuring .345" wide at the back and .356 at the front. The Mecgar .40 mag lips measure .378" on one and .381" on the other.

The one on the left is .40?

Eeeh! Sorry Hans, wrong guess. Would you like to go for Double Jeopardy where the scores can really change?

What , john McClain used a Beretta 92 , so its kind of a fitting answer.lol
The left one's the 9 , the only difference between the two are the follower on the 9 has longer legs (?) And the mag body has long deep grooves to limit the number of rounds.

Ha! That was funny... I liked that show...no, I accept my loss, head hung in shame...

I had the same problem. I also have the problem of being supremely clumsy. I was practicing mag changes in my basement (unloaded, of course) and I must've dropped the damn thing a dozen times! Right on the feed lips... I must've "broken in" the mag , because she fits 13 rounds and cycles nicely ;)

In all seriousness though, if you tinker with the feed lips a bit, you're not going to jail. It still fits ten (no more than ten) rounds of .40 S&W right? So you haven't modified the magazine beyond it's designed purpose. I've got some magazines at home that needed this treatment (aftermarket M14 mags...) and they're not all of the sudden prohibited...
