358 Winchester - too much for whitetail deer?

So called Premium bullets are a pure waist of money in the .358 I load 40 grains of IMR 4198 behind the Hornady 250 SP for my 16" barreled Ruger Frontier, groups are .5 moa and everything that get hits drops in its tracks, and on deer you can eat up to the bullet hole.

Now this is uncanny..... I have the same rifle , use the same load , get the same results..... hows that for a comparison ??

I have been using the 358 for a few years and taken a hand full of deer with it.
I hand load the 200 Hornady Spitzer and have never recovered a bullet or ever
shot twice at a deer. I am very impressed with it's knockdown power which
is all out of proportion to its size. I would not hesitate to take moose with
one of the heavier bullets within its effective range.
It's a Great Caliber in a handy rifle.

i had a 375 win. in a marlin // then the 358 win.BLR OH YEA THAT IS WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT this is a stoping gun and eat right around the hole no blood spalder here

Ol' Jack O'Conner said it right,.."probably the most deadly woods cartridge in existence,",..I absolutely love mine,..Thors hammer on Black bear and Whitetail.
Anyone thinking of getting a .358Win,...go get it,..you won't be disapointed. All us .358Win cult members would love to see more owners of this great old cartridge,....It blows my mind why this cartridge never gained major popularity.

Rest assured on meat damage with a 358 as has been said I'd also consider mid bores and bigger at moderate velocities meat misers not meat wasters. A 243 at close range with a cup and core bullet will do way more damage than a 358 will.

My Whelen is in the same class-ish. It's been my go to gun for years. I've popped many deer and a few moose using many loads. Factory 200 Cor-Lokts, 225 TSX's, 225 SBTs and 250 Hornadys to name a few. Never has anything gone far, and never have I destroyed much meat as long as I put the shot where it should go. Your 358 Winchester will be the same.

358W....225gr Partition @ 80 yds...drilled about a 1.25" hole right through the shoulders... not much bloodshot at all. Cut out about 3" around bullet hole. Nice performance :)
I can reach out to 300yds easy , think of it as a supercharged 308!
My 300 WM does MASSIVE damage compared to this round and I see NO difference inside 250 yds for deer killing effect...Drop on the spot.

My load is 49.5gr IMR 4895 MAX in Nosler manual @2470fps over a chronny from my BLR's 20" barrel

Wow! Nice buck! I have a takedown that I haven't taken hunting yet. Still tinkering with some Hornady 200gr RNs bullets.

I just picked up (35 minutes ago)a Ruger Hawkeye stainless in 358 win with a bunch of factory ammo, I have way too many large bore/large case rifles, this little rifle/cartridge combo looks like a nice little package that will get the job done without being hard on the shoulder or my precious stock of powder.

I had one just like that which I foolishly sold. If I had a nickel for every time I've said that...You will have lots of fun shooting that rifle.

Please tell me more about your experiences with the .375 Winchester! I would like to know anything you wish to share...

Also how does the .375win compare to the .358win you now use?

cheers

Not trying to hijack the post, but I'm guessing you guys would say pretty much the same thing on using a 348WCF on deer? I have used mine for moose, always had it in the back of my mind that it was a bit too big for deer. Thinking after reading this that that would not be the case. I also the following in an article on the 348WCF cartridge on Leverguns.com :
"Ballistically .. at least on paper .. the .348 Winchester falls somewhere between the .350 Remington Magnum and the .358 Winchester I say "on paper" since in real life the paper figures do not always turn out to be totally true. For all practical purposes the .358 gives identical performance as the .348 Winchester."
Sounds like the two cartridges are pretty similar. Anyone have experience with the 348 on deer or can compare both?
Matt

I remember reading Jack's comments years and years ago; how the .358 ought to be the premier deer/moose/bear woods round in no time. And the "new" model 88 and 100 Winchesters would fly off the shelves in .358 chambering. I think the .358 just came along at the time when the "magnum" (lighter, smaller, faster bullets) craze was just beginning and people were drifting away from lever/pump/semi autos and buying bolt guns. A few guys tried the .358 and loved it but they were swimming against the current. And Matt your .348 will work great on deer with 200 grain loads though an old fellow I know claims the 250 grain Silvertip Winchester factory loads just poke a hole clear through deer without expanding. He used 200 grainers for deer.
