Hi there, im looking for some help and some info from you guys. I am looking at buying a 12.6 luger from a gunstore. I do not have a prohibited licence. What I am wantimg to do Is pay for it, then pay for it to be sent to some one who can do the barrel swap so it would be restricted.

Im looking for some info from any of you that have had barrels swapped. Can anyone recommend a gunsmith who is capable of the swap? Thanks in advance.

Epps is doing one for me now. Apparantly its completed and they sent the paperwork to the RCMP for the classification change and that's what is slowing the process down. I have heard that it can take 2 months or more for the paperwork. Still impatiently waiting.

B+P's never did return the factory barrel to my buddy after putting an 19" one on his Storm .45 ! Likely sold it.Harold

If you dont mind me asking, Roughly what is it costing you at epps? Thanks for the heads up!

Thanks everyone for the replies

If your out west the place to go is called Dlask Arm's and the cost to do the swap out .. for a 110/mm- $350 and for a 152/mm - $450. I just checked into for my Luger , still don't know if I want to do it yet .:)

May be wrong but isn't the barrel the prohib part? So no liscence no barrell

The detached barrel from a Beretta Storm would be just another barrel, legally. Only detached short pistol barrels are prohibited devices.
Maybe the old barrel was part of the payment for the work.

I do believe your wrong, the underlength barrel makes the firearm prohib, put on the legal barrel and the firearm magically becomes restricted from prohib. The old prohib barrel is your property and should have been returned after the work was done in my books.

A detached short pistol barrel is a prohibited device.
Once a prohibited handgun is rebarrelled and reclassified as restricted, the barrel becomes prohibited.
It cannot be retained except by a business specifically licenced to possess prohibited devices.
A private person cannot be in possession of one of these barrels.
Usually the detached barrel is destroyed or surrendered for destruction.

$310 plus tax for the rebarreling and to do the RCMP status change. And as others have stated, no I don't get to keep the old barrel as its a prohib item and I don't have a prohib licence.

Tiriaq, if you have a link to this I would like to read up and educate myself on what makes a stand alone, detached barrel, a "prohib device" Thanks for your insight and asssitance.

Its ridiculous, but true. I too have a Luger coming my way, and everyone has told me that the original barrel must be destroyed or bought by someone with a prohib license. Apparently 3mm of steel suddenly makes turns a criminal's weapon of choice into a respectable firearm. I bet the typical gang banger loser couldn't even load and #### a Luger, much less keep it running reliably.

There should be a massive letter writing campaign to local MPs, plus the heritage minister and anyone else we can think of to get the Luger exempt, before they all get mangled.

I had 2 P.08 Lugers changed to restricted length barrels about 8 years ago as well by Dlask. Very nicely done. ... And yes, the original barrels were turned into the RCMP for destruction. They considered the barrels prohibited devices... Too bad as both Lugers were matching.... Should have had the barrels deactivated....

I would like to see the directive/law/regulation or something official on this short barrel question.

talk to the RCMP, they'll tell you. I've had several friends in the same boat rebarrelling to remove from prohib status and none where able to keep the barrels. I purchased a Dan Wesson revolver largely to keep the 3 sub 106mm barrels from being cut up so the store could sell it as a restricted not a prohib.

Doesn't have to make sense. It's just the way it is :(

^ Cocked and locked. I hear you but I have zero faith in the RCMP when it comes to firearm law. Surely this must be in writing somewhere. I would dearly love to see a order or directive stating the underlength barrel is so evil it must be destroyed or turned in for the good of mankind and the continuation of the human race.

Try Peter at lugercollector.com. I bet he can find you a nicer one for less and have it rebarrelled in a jiffy. Mine took just a couple weeks - Epps was quoting 6 months

Just advertise on the EE with a Want To Buy Ad for a Restricted Luger. There are probably lots out there that have been converted. And at the same time, you're not buggering up an all matching gun - hopefully. Another option for you is the Artillery Luger and Navy Luger with the longer barrels, although pricey.
