Looking to add a 1911 9mm to the stable and am looking for opinions. Had a chance to shoot a Norc in 45 last week and was actually surprised at how well it functioned. I am willing to spend up to $800 or so. The STI Spartan V caught my eye but none local to see and feel in person.

Suggestions are welcome

Have the STI in 9mm & Spartan in 45ACP, I would not hesitate to recommend the "Spartan" very tight smooth and well made and very accurate.

Norc or SAM on the lower end fits your budget requirement. The Spartan is also an awesome 9mm. Had one for a few years and loved it. Check the EE, there is a NP29 up for grabs currently. Also, Wolverine has a used SAM Enhanced for sale.

SAM Omega 6 9mm. It is great right out of the box.

Get a Commander if going 9mm though...no need for full size with that puny cartridge lol
Spartan IV has a bull barrel which is a nice touch on a budget piece.

Yep the STI Spartan is not bad at all I have handled one recently.
Myself I have the ranger ll, no regrets exept sight radius could be better for IPSC, that's why the Trojans in the mail.
If I we're to do it again I woudnt have started with a commander lenght

While the Norcs can turn out to be great guns they DO come with some things that need attention and often have parts that fit less than perfectly. For example all three Norcs I've had needed to be de-horned before use. Every 90 degree or sharper edge on the gun was like a razor blade. I mean EVERY edge. These things can make you bleed quicker than a Ronco Whiz cutter.

My NP29 has a few fitting issues that are waiting for my machine shop to be finished as well.

None of this stops it from being a helluva shooter though. Even with a slide to frame fit which would be kindly described as "wobbly" the groups it produces are still tight. And it can only get better from there. A buddy's NP29 which he got fixed up including a mag well was amazing for the trigger and accuracy.

But all in all a Norc 1911 is best considered as an almost finished kit of parts that needs some work to really be finished.

So if such work isn't for you then I'd skip the Norc and figure on a Spartan or SAM or something of that sort.

Fit and finish of the Ruger and Remington 1911's is great for the price. If one or both of them come out with a 9mm version it would be worth it.

spartan spartan spartan. worth the extra over a SAM and good enough for anything you need it to do. only downside is wussy finish, but meh that adds character

I was lucky enough to find a 9mm Series 80 Colt Combat Commander a few years ago on consignment. I love it. I got it for $900. Turns out it had been f'd with and ended up needing a new ramped barrel installed, (thank you Gunnar at Armco for that nice work), previous owner had taken a dremel or file to the throat and frame. I didn't look closely enough. Anyway, it's all good now, I love that gun, the size is perfect and it shoots great. Novak Night Sights, Ambi safeties, mag well, carbon fibre skeletonized trigger, coco bolo grips, I think I might just go get it out of the safe for a little fondling!

For what its worth ranger ll also has a wussy finish, and that one is made in Texas!
I agree that spartan over sam anytime, especially for the small price difference.
Down the road, 20k rounds later, if finish wore off too much to your liking send it to a gunsmith to retighten tolerances and have a nice black hard chrome finish done at the same time ;)

So I am seeing lots of votes for the Spartan, figured that would go that direction. I had contacted Freedom last week and they had stock on them at $821, is there a better deal that anyone has seen on them?

Elwood Epps, SFRC etc. A bit less expensive that's all. I have a STI Trojan V arriving this week, likely would have been happy with the Spartan. I like the 1911 platform but don't want to blast away on 45 all the time, this is the 1911 I'll blast on.

Why does the STI Spartan 1911 in 9mm keep calling my name? :p

Cuz for $800 you get an STI tuned 1911..... ;)
I have the Spartan IV in .45 and it is a really nice shooting gun, definately one of my favorites.
