New hunting rifle?

If you want a 7mm-08, buy it...it will work fine on moose, so will a 308 or a 30-06. Over the years I've come to the realization that a moose shot broadside in the the lungs at 300+ yards will die just as quickly whether you've used a 7-08 or 7mm remington mag. :)

.308 or 30-06
You can find bullets anywhere and both calibers are capable of killing the animals you mentioned humanely. You can never go wrong with either one.

7mm-08 or 308 are great shooting calibers you cant go wrong with either one. But for straight up deer hunting I'd lean to the 7mm-08. For the bush I dont think anything is better than a 30-30. They are fast pointing and easy to carry. I'd take a 7mm rem mag before a 30-06 but thats just me.

I just picked up a .270 as my go to caliber. I have a .223 for coyote and .22lr for smaller game and would like a 30-30 but the .270 is there to drop anything I come across in hee he meantime. Happy shopping.

Well Im down to 3 choices. The 7mm08 a 270 or a 308 as I am already going to be loading for a 308.

If you are already reloading 308, its hard to argue against that choice.

On the other hand, if you want something different, the 7mm-08 can be made from 308 cases, and is a step down recoil-wise. The 270 is a longer cartridge, and requires a slightly longer barrel for maximum velocity, but at the max velocity it shoots faster and flatter than the other two. If you need something for 300+ yard shots, then the 270 might be your best choice.

Anyone that says a 7-08 is too light for moose, has not shot many moose.

As another poster stated, moose are not difficult to kill. I have personally shot at least 8 with the 7x57,
which is a ballistic twin to the 7-08. None required a second shot to anchor. ranges: 65 yards to 360 yards.

Just choose a decent bullet for your moose, and go hunting. The 7-08 will work fine.

While the 308 and 30-06 are both fine, versatile chambering's, they are not absolutely necessary for what you are seeking.

Regards, Dave.

I think I will go with the 7mm08 as I really like the info I have found on it. It will be for next year now as I have spent all my cash on my Musgrave RSA F/TR rifle. I also just had the headspace tightened up on my Enfield No1 MK III with a new bolthead so it is good to go for a while.
