the ideal walking stalking hunting rifle

Tikka T3 Stainless/laminate. Very lite, shortish barrel, detachable mag and comes up fast for me. I have the T3 lite but one thing no one ever talks about is the "Thwack" noise a branch will make when it whips across the synthetic stocks. You can "stuff" the hollow stock but a wood stock is quieter and warmer. Mine is 7mm-08rem and I love it, works great on blacktail and is very accurate. As for optics, a 2-7X40 is great in the brush or a 3-9X40 for versatility. Pick the best quality glass you can afford, leupold VX-2 would be my choice for around the 400 mark.

Marlin 1895 sbl, it's what I use. Might be a bit heavy for some, but it's short, quick pointing, and is capable of dropping anything in North America.

Although I have to be careful with it, my ruger international fits me better then any rifle I've ever held. It's in 308 and is stainless. Points instantly. That would have to be my choice. If things were going be be rough it would be a toss up between the 336ss, 1895gs and the finnlite

Currently a new production Winchester 1892 in 44-40.

Took this deer hunting last year, guess who saw a nice buck 300ish yards away? ;)

Currently, my go to rifle is a Remington 798 (Zastavia Mauser) in 7mm Rem Mag with a Leoupold 3X9X40 VXII. But I live on the prairies where shots are typical at 300 plus yards.

The 250 savage is actually close to what I had in mind in a small light bolt action but I think I'm going to look at re boring a 223 to a 25/223
This will be more versatile for my style of hunting. I can load 60 gr cast for squirrel and rabbits and 87-100 gr jacketed for coyotes and whitetail

I hunt south west Ontario for coyotes and when I venture north during deer season I hunt thicker plots and walk older clear cut roads so shots are typically 150 yards or less. Often a lot less and my 25/06 jellys a lot of meat when I hit a deer at 50 yards
Thanks for the ideas keep them coming

Where I hunt deer 100 yards is a far shot so keep that in mind.

Savage 340 C in 30/30
Ruger Gunsite scout .308
Ruger 44 magnum carbine
Rossi Ranch hand with full stock in 44 magnum

All have the same characteristics. Short. Light. Fast to come to the shoulder. Very accurate at the distances I hunt.

What is your idea of the perfect stalking rifle for coyote to deer size game?

A pre-Remlin Remington M-7, Ron Smith #3 contour 22" stainless fluted 1:7 6mm barrel with a barrel band front sight base, chambered for .243 Winchester, bedded in a McMillan Edge or a Wildcat Ultra-lite Kevlar stock, topped with a Leupold 2.5-8X32 scope in QD rings fastened to an aluminum Picatinny rail, to facilitate a second scope and/or a ghost ring and post.

I hear ya you certainly don't need the reach/speed of a 25-06. Most of my shots are less than 150 as well but there's always a chance of more so my deer rifle these days is a 260 rem. With ttsx bullets I don't find meat damage bad at all with it. Having said that a 30-30 would be about perfect for you too. Or go the other way, speedy small bullet - a 223 if its legal out there.

Browning BLR in any caliber you choose. The straight walnut stocks are the best ergonomically for me. Peep sights or low power scope. Carry all day and as quick at target acquisition as one can be. Don't forget the electrical tape over the muzzle for the really dirty weather.

M700 Mountain in 7x57, factory Walnut MR stock. Leupold VX-II, 2-7 compact.

Loaded with 140 Accubonds, it would be good from 25 - 400 meters.

Regards, Dave.
