Guys guys guys.
the time has almost come to start loading up an ready to pack out for the Top end.

Im wanting to hear your opinions on the .375 Winchester for Buffalo!!?!

220gr Hornadys will be the load and fairly modest velocity of 1900fps!

Ultimately limits my shot range to 100-150m depending how big a Buffalo looks in the Peep sight ;)

Im really considering taking the 94 with me! 7 up the tube sounds deadly :)

Never shot a Buff or a 375 Win...but I've whacked a few Muledeer with a 38-55 loaded to medium at best. It's got that big bore thing going; in other words, put your bullets in the right spot and it 'Bats way outside it's league'.
The velocity x bullet wt formula seems to favor high velocity magnums; but the big bore kills quite well.
I did find the 38-55 winchester factory loads to be quite Milquetoast though...(but the antique rifles bore didn't help when shooting the jacketed bullets either).
I'm interested in what the 'Super Modified' ( Rednek thing refers to a class in tractor pulls, lol) version of the Winchester classic performs like.
Good luck BTW

Thanks Tok, My loads are quite below Factory loads, they seem to pack a few more FPS.. but I guess my BB behaves like you're 38-55, big slug moving rather steady, I have shot Sambar deer with it which is similar story to your mule deer.

The guys have used 308s with 180 Woodleigh...... IMO at 100m the .375win sounds like better medicine!?

If you can get a hit on something that will provide some resistance, a muscled up front quarter or a neck vertebrae just ahead of the shoulder, they drop like they've been hit with an invisible hammer
But I had that Milquetoast factory ammo pass through on a forward neck shot, in between the spinal column and the carotid / jugular vein. Might as well have missed...
But mine is possessing a really bad bore...gotta tell the truth. Needs pure lead oversized bullets and BP. Then it does what it's supposed to.
I'm pretty sure your's is much better

yeah mate mine has no problem with jacketed bullets but I stuffed up when I started reloading an read an old manual which stated a max at such, which compared to new manuals is about 6 gr lower or so... so I estimate around 1900fps.

its accurate enough for certain, at 50m I can put them into about an inch open sight an at 100 I can hit 8-10inch circles.

The lower velocity an reasonably solid bullet should help penetration compared to a faster load im thinking.. also not opening up as much either

Never shot one of yours but my impression is that they're large, heavy and mud-slathered. Those descriptors don't inspire me to use marginal cartridges. Then again, not much inspires me to use marginal cartridges. I tend to lean the opposite way.

Just supposition at this point, of course. But I think the OP has a Win 94 in 375 and while I'm only vaguely familiar with Australia / New Zealand's draconian gun laws...I don't know that the OP has access to the variety that we have.
As I said supposition only. But if a 375 win was the best tool in my selection, I'm sure it would do the job. The tired on 38-55 I've got was a primary elk / moose carbine for many years...it's too small by a darned sight compared to the offerings we have now. It's on the bottom end of marginal for WT / Muledeer .
But a 375 has considerably more steam and if that's the best tool in my chest for Buff; with limited access to other caliber's...375 for Buff would be the order of the day I suppose.
BTW Whelanlad, good luck

Ha Ha carn mate!

Honestly, the last cape I shot had a striking resemblance to a black pig with horns. Like most things there is a range in sizes, and some overlap but across the board they aren't even in the same league. The buffalo in South America are smaller than yours, but they are bigger than the capes too. For starters, they are a foot or so taller and a couple feet longer in the body.

Another vote for the Whelen! A 220gr at 1900fps vs a 225gr at 2700fps is a no brainer for an animal of this size.

If you're good in the stalk and set-up for the shot, I reckon the .375 Winnie would do the job if
you used 265 gr. cast boolit with a hardness of 22-25 BHN. Drive said boolit at 1700 fps. and it
will do the trick. Brain the bastard or sever the spine to dump 'er quick. Range to shoot would
best be 50 yds. or under.

I would not use the 220 gr. Hornady because of it's light construction. This bullet would come apart
too soon in a critter like a buff.

Just the same though, I'd have a mate next to me with a .458 in case of a boo-boo.;)

If you must use the .375 Win then why not use Woodleigh's 235gr Hydrostatically Stabilized solid that is designed for that specific cartridge?
