I have a stag arms model 4 ar but I want to be clear of the restricted rifles so I can enjoy it, its pretty accurate and id like to stay away from bullpups. I really like the hk sl-8 from what I know they seem really good but im curious as to what the other options might be, im just going to sell the AR to buy said rifle.

SL8 is cool but fwiw the thumbhole stock sort of sucks...and it costs a few hundred to sort that out with a stock conversion.

I held one at a gun store recently and it wasn't awful but it wasn't great either.
Heavy gun, and it uses proprietary magazines...a few other negatives.

Mostly you will find SL8-5's in stock if you find one at all...SL8-4 is more normal looking and doesn't have the cantilevered rail.

I have a SL-8. It is heavy, but the NEA mag adapter requires no mods, and works great with AR-15 mags of most makers. It shoots awesome with most factory ammo, though I found MFS flings all over the place, and keyholes. No idea why. The thumbhole stock feels fine when I shoot it, but sucks to threaten the mirror with, as the angle is wrong. I haven't changed it, because I have plenty of other guns to do that job.

Would I recommend the rifle? Sure. It shoots nice, is non-restricted, and says HK on the side. Would I want to carry it for six months in the field? No thank you.

Im 6,6 so the rifle weight is no issue I much prefer my rifle to be heavyer., I held one in p&d earlier this year I realy liked it. Good to know a new one is coming out thanks for the input

care to share a link please to the new SL8 as i cannot find it on the net
Wait out until the new sl8's come out. Look them up seem awesome come with pistol grip and everything no modes needed.

@7.62xfun
i am 6ft 3in and carry my sl8 on a 3 point sling(god send, invest in one you wont regret it) and hunt all year round with mine.
would never ever sell it

I would happly trade my model 4 for a sl-8 any day if the week I've only fired maybe 150 rounds. I just find that a sl-8 would be infinitely more useful to me

Yep if it comes NR that will be my new best friend... are they here yet from what I can see most of this is from a year ago?

The SL-8 is a benchrest rifle?!? That is one of the goofier things I've read on this forum.
They can be front heavy due to the heavy barrel, but it is realitive to the rifles' overall weight which is 8.6 pounds with empty magazine.

They are a fine rifle, made better with a G36 conversion to get rid of the thumb hole stock, and it looks as though HK is going to make it better still with the intro of the HK243

Agreed - the choice of words if a little off. I think that saying it's "easier to shoot off a bench with a bipod/bags" would have been better than saying it's a benchrest rifle !

the HK is a great rifle and for the money it can not be beat in accuracy in a factory semi. The cheapest option for mags is the magpull G36 mags and modify them slightly to fit the SL8. (You can buy a lot of magpul G36 mags for the cost of a good mag well conversion like the Spuhr and then you lose the benefits of a better mag system.

by "field" I assume you mean if you were in the military? If that was the case you would have a G36, not the civilian commercial version....... I would take that over a lot of other rifles.
