I'm planning on buying one of the DA 5.56 (M-16) rifles from Canada Ammo . I was considering the CQ-A (M-4) ,but am a big fan of the retro look and full-size rifle ( not to mention , it's 100 $ cheaper ) .
.
.
I have asked this question on the Canada Ammo thread , but figure I will get more responses on this thread : My question is - do I want the 1-12" or 1-9" twist rate ? I'm not planning on reloading , and am planning on shooting the cheapest ammo I can get . Right now I shoot surplus ammo out of my SKS's/Mosins/SVT-40 and would do the same out of my AR . What's the difference or would I even notice ? Thanks,
ZS

If you are going to just use cheap ammo, either twist will be fine. Most cheap ammo seems to be 55gr, which will work with either twist rate. And since the cheap ammo isn't going to be very accurate anyways, twist rate really isn't going to matter.

1-9 is still going to be a bit more versatile though.

all that 55 grain stuff isn't going to last forever- 1/7 has been around for quite a while now ( I have an 89 issue colt) and why limit yourself intentionally- the 55 grains shoot "acceptably" out of that tube , but the 62/65s shoot even batter and I use 69 grain hpbt like it's meant for them- my next 223/556 is also going to be a 1/7 twist if I can get it- additionally, I have all the testing the usmc and other boards went through in going from the m16a1 to the m16a2 and i'm convinced the 1/7 bore is the right ticket in terms of lethality and penetration

Crap,

So i ordered this same rifle with the 1/12 thinking better accuracy with more twist. Not even sure if that's correct or not, am i screwed now with limited ammo selection.
Is there something i can or cant shoot with that twist rate ??

1/9 is more twist. 1/12 is what the first M16A1 rifles used in 'nam had

Try to re-order or change the order with CanAm. You shouldn't bother with anything heavier than a 55 grain bullet

Well, it's not the end of the world. Just means you won't be as accurate with bullets heavier than about 55 gr. So it really depends on how far you plan on shooting. If your range is only 100-200 yards or so, 55 gr bullets are fine. And since ARs are restricted, it's not like you are going to go hunting with it.

The twist rate as written indicates revolution per inches. So 1 in 12 means one whole revolution of the bullet in 12 inches of travel. Therefore 1 in 7 is almost twice the spin rate or twist as 1 in 12 would be

You want the 1 in 9, or 8, or 7. With 1 in 12, you will top out at around the 55-60 gr mark in terms of bullet choices.

With 1 in 12, at least 22lr conversion units will not lead up as much lol....
Only benefit I can think of really.

I think most commercial AR's are 1:9 ( correct me if I'm wrong).
My VZ58 .223 is 1:7 and it holds decent groups at 150yds with 62gr MFS cheap ammo. From the sounds of your experience I doubt your going to be hollowing quarters at 200yds but the 1:9 is going to be better accuracy.

actually, most commercial ars vary between 1/7 and 1/9- all one needs to do is look at the specs- if you don't like it, don't buy it- go to another whose twist does suit you- my old colt is a 1/7 hbar a2- and that's 1989 issue- the one with the carry handle- with the ar system being modular i'd be inclined to save the money and either build one myself or get someone to build it for me- that way I can spec the twist- and the barrel weight as well-as I said before I like 1/7 , but 1/8 would also be acceptable- however 1/9 is getting on the outer fringes- and since I roll my own, I use a 70 grain pill moving at 2510 or so- 25 grains of ww748

Original Poster here - Thanks to all of you for the great advice . I went ahead and ordered my Dominion Arms DA556 M16-Style Rifle w/1-9" Twist Rate today .

Since I am breaking my Restricted cherry , I also went ahead and bought a Norinco 1911A1 Government Model . I've always wanted a .45 . It was 349 $ a few days ago , and when I checked again today , it was down to 279 $ , so I had to .
.
It's also a win/win , since Mrs. Zombie Stalker used her AmEx to pay and scored herself 800 points .

Can I afford it ? No . Do I need to eat every day until the next paycheque ?
