I've got one of the new tapco mags that has a big shiny alum. rivet through the side, at the bottom of the mag. I suspect it is different than the ones you can drill a hole in the bottom and disassemble to clean. Has anyone taken the rivet out yet to see what it is built like?

If you take the rivet out you are in posession of a PROHIBITED DEVICE. Don't touch the rivet. Most of the mags you can remove the bottom plate but the spring won't come out as the rivet keeps the follower from passing. You can clean the mag of firing residue but if you remove the round limiting rivet then you have went from a non restricted device to a Prohibited one. Dumb laws but that is the realty at the moment.

I'd imagine it's the same mag/internals. I suspect the rivet is just there to make it harder to take the guts out and chop that big plastic "plug" off.
Rivets are easy to drill out. Prison is a bit harder to drill out of.

Man I wouldn't even take one apart to clean it. With my luck that's exactly when some officers would break-in saying something like...We just got a distress 911 call from here. Or was it for next door? Hey what's THAT?
Nope. If mine ever need any internal attention, I think they will see the internal side of a dumpster or of a fire or something and I'll just buy replacements.

I'd love to say...it's a free country. Knock yourself out. Unfortunately, three years is a long time to be away.
I hate to say...if you just put 5rds in stripper clips they're pretty fast and you can use them with the 5/20s.

3 seconds with a drill for 3 years? No thanks. Not me.
:-(

You can take it apart to clean you just won't be able to get the spring out. Some brands you might be able to. I am not familiar with the tapco ones though. I know the metal ones you can't. You can disassemble them for cleaning you just can't remove the rivet by law.

How would it be illegal if you took the rivet out of it when the mag is still pinned with the plastic stopper to accept five rounds?

Could you not just drill the rivet out and after cleaning re rivet it? Just clean it every 500 rounds, box of rivets are cheap, or is that a no no in the eyes if the powers that be?

Do it ,how else are you going to know for sure ,I would and i have removed rivets from pinned mags and of course replaced it again.I would however NOT do that out in the field...of course.

How many people do you think go to their private properties, drill out the rivets and blast away ,then replace it ??? I`ll bet more than a few ,although I would not myself and think it would be an aweful foolish exercise.

I had a pinned metal mag for an SKS years ago, that was F$%#@......so I de-pinned it ,cleaned it ,fixed it and put it back together again an re-pinned myself properly.

It`s still a piece of sh%& LOL

No need to get all paranoid ,and if it`s that bad ,make a tinfoil hat ;=)

Take care

What's with all these guys "cleaning" their magazines?!?
I have a few magazines for various firearms with thousands of rounds though them... Never taken apart and nothing more than a wipe externally every blue moon.
One beretta 92 magazine I've had for years and years. It's an old high cap and when it was limited to ten it was welded closed. It's never missed a beat. The only bummer is the rocket scientist that limited it made it 9 rounds, lol.

There was a court case in bc where a fellow was charged and convicted for ar-15 magazine body's alone. So once you disassemble it you are then in possession of a prohibited device.

Talk about paranoid....holy...

I've redone bad pinning/riveting jobs many times, and I'm still a free man. What you do in the privacy of your own home is your own business, who the heck is gonna know for the 10 minutes its apart? Cripes.....

Well, everyone is different Repro, I'm not too worried either about it, just wanted to know how it's put together in case of the apocalypse, and how to clean it next time I drop it in the mud. ;-)

When someone comes on a public forum and asks, I am not gonna make myself a target and tell them to go against the law. If you wish to knock yerself out. Either the OP knows the answer and is coming here to get moral support for doing something on his own, or doesn't know and is clueless, I err on the side of caution. If you wish to do otherwise in the privacy of you home, that is your business, but you might want to consider airing it and advising others in public, lest you make yourself a target for unexpected inspection... just my take on it, others opinions may vary.

Agreed, discussions such as this on such a well known (and monitored) forum show a remarkable lack of discretion . When said inspection does come, and a prohibited device is found because someone forgot to re--pin it because the macaroni was burning, never got around to re assembling or whatever. then what ? it wouldn't be the first time that kind of thing has happened.

And the govt has admitted on the news that they watch us. FYI ...

They know how stupid the mag regs are, but they are useful the same way the storage and transportation regs are in manufacturing charges, conviction and firearms prohibition.

It is possible you could get investigated and charged while cleaning or repairing a magazine, 99% of the time nobody knows or cares, but the regulation is there for LE and FO to use at their discretion.

The goal of the mag reg like all of the others is to manufacture firearms prohibition. It is even possible that one day somebody could get charged and convicted for having a 5 shot "pinned" mag and then it is a whole new ball of wax.

It's indicative of the unhealthy, sado masochistic nature of the Firearms Act. "Even if you're not doing anything wrong or that endangers public safety, we'll find you and charge you".

The Firearms Act and the attitudes behind it are sick, it needs to be repealed and replaced like yesterday.

That rivet sometimes gets in the way if you want to change out followers. I can't really see someone going to jail for unpinning a mag and cleaning or changing parts and then repinning it. Oh wait wasn't there just a "high risk takedown" over some kids buying an airsofts gun? Disregard my comment they probably would through you in jail. Just think if turdo gets elected we won't have to worry about rivets because we'll all have had our doors kicked in and all dangerous items removed for our own safety.

When a prohibited magazine is created, a chopper descends from the sky upon your location filled with an RCMP swat team. And somewhere Justin Trudeau and Thomas Mulcair cry a single knowing tear when they sense the potential violence towards women and danger to public saftey to come.

Think of that before you drill that rivet...

We can make Trudeau and Mulcair cry ?!!

So anyhow to answer your question, yes they are the same just drill that hole on the bottom plate to gain better access for cleaning. Slide of the plate off and you can see your internal rivet holding the plug in place. Ive noticed a few rivets in bad locations not allowing 5 1/2 rounds of clearance, buy a pop rivet gun and adjust to fit. They threw in the rivet because they realized people were drilling and removing bottom plates for cleaning and rcmp like to have the obvious visual rivet for inspection. If you have an old tapco mag and drill the plate you need to add said rivet to comply, once the old plates slide off your in magical dangerland.
Dry silicone spray works best on these plastic mags, repels burnt powder and dust and wipes clean.
