Retumbo For 30-06?

Hodgdon has a concept that I find helpful. They package 4, 1/4 lb. containers in a box with four different powders for those reloaders to develop loads.

In the box, there was a 1/4 lb. of Retumbo. I'm loading 30-06. I have looked on line, but cannot find load data for this powder in this cartridge. Data for the .338 and .300 magnums are there.

My questions. Is Retumbo too slow of a powder for the 30-06? Or does somebody on CGN have data for this cartridge/powder combination? If the data isn't there, anyone want to buy a quarter pound of Retumbo? (jk)

No data on the 30-06/retumbo question but...

How old are your hodgdon experimental packs? If new where did you find them?

That's a good question. A sport shop that's been in our town for about a hundred years, (literally) had this pack in the back of the store. I'm guessing the pack is old.

I was looking for some H4831, and this pack had two 1/4 pounders in it. Someone had replaced the H1000 container with the second H4831.

Besides the Retumbo, the other one is the H4350. I will be doing some more load development with that powder too. I did get some good velocities with it so far.

I'll just shelf the Retumbo in case I get a Win Mag sometime.

Thanks all.

If you want to use a heavy bullet for your 30/06, Retumbo should work well. I'm using H1000 in a 243 wildcat. Many here will say it's too slow for such a small cartridge but it works great with heavy bullets and over capacity powder loads.

Load data might not be available. H1000 would be compressed with upper 220 gr bullet loads. Might be the ideal powder for a 250 gr round nose bullet in 30-06.

Might be the ideal powder for a 250 gr round nose bullet in 30-06.

Kind of what I was thinking. I had planned on using the 210 gr. Bergers, but I have no idea what I would use as a starting point.

It's irrelevant anyway. So many good powders out there, so I don't "have" to try and use up the Retumbo.

Would this be one of those times where you can't fit enough into the case to do any damage, or are there other concerns when using such a slow powder?

My nephew shoots 240 grain Woodleigh bullets in the '06, he shoots a compressed load of H1000, and gets about 2400 fps... Don't let anyone tell you H1000 is too slow for the '06, you just need a big bullet.

H1000 might work, but there are better options out there. Retumbo is just too slow for the '06, no matter what you are capping it with. Retumbo is for those big overbore cases. My .338 RUM loves it for 250-275 grain slugs.

It is almost right beside H1000 on the burn scale.

I use H1000 for some things that some say shouldn't be.

As others have stated , for a meatier bullet, why not try?

Sometimes what should work doesn't and what shouldn't knocks our socks off.

Go about trying it with common sense, I see no issues, if it works great, if not, next!!!

I have W760 working in large capacity and magnum cases and H1000 working in quarter bore chamberings.Go figure.

I shoot 300 Weatherby and 338/378 Weatherby, I use Retumbo in both. Retumbo is for overbore magnum rifles, with heavy bullets, not for the 30/06

The idea of these packs with four 1/4 lb samples is just that - to try them out.

Retumbo is "too slow" for the 30-06 only in the sense that it's not "optimal" for even the heaviest bullets, in that Max MV will not be reached as you won't achieve a pressure that will produce that. That doesn't mean it might not be accurate and otherwise useful, in fact as Dan mentioned it would be worth trying in 200 or 220 gr bullets and might be optimal with 250 gr.
