You're favourite devastating ammo?

Sounds like it. Critical defence has a black hull, 1600 fps, 8 pellets in a versatite wad. It sure sounds like a re-label.

Winchester Double X SB1200 and SB12300 00 buck, which are a premium type load with 9 and 12 pellets respectively, at 1450 fps.

12GA 2 3/4" Magnum 00 Buck (12 Pellet) Federal Premium copper-plated
12GA 3" Magnum 000 Buck / 00 Buck / 4 Buck Federal Premium copper-plated
12GA 3" Magnum 1oz rifled slug @ 1760 fps

Those are my all time favorites....

I also bought 4 boxes (25 shells/box) of my favorite shot shell...Winchester Magnum Hi-brass load for larger game and plinking lol ....its 12GA 3" Magnum BB Shot 1 7/8 oz loads.....almost 2 ounces of lead BB shot....WOW, its absolutely SIZZILING LOL

Next step up before getting into large magnum buckshot is the Federal Premium copper-plated load of 12GA 3" Magnum #4 Buckshot (41pellet) @1100 fps....gives a new name to the term Scattergun ;) ....patterns very nice, and has some muscle over smaller lead shot. Its like full metal jacket #4 Buckshot...41 copper plated buckshot pellets is a heafty payload.

Shotguns are so freakn fun to take out to play with, testing different loads, different ranges, see how different loads pattern out of your gun....testing your skills with slugs at 100/200 yards....its a blast. Pun intended lol

If you're lucky enough to have some farm land/private property or Crown land with nobody for miles and a nice backstop. Set up lots of targets and different ranges...and have at er ;)

Out of all the shotties Ive owned, by far my Benelli M4 and my Mossberg M590A1 14" bbl both with fully adjustable Ghost-Ring sights make them VERY accurate with 1oz. rifled slugs.

Damn I love Shotties ;)

Federal 00 Buck with the flite control wad. Twenty five yards or closer and it's an 8 piece slug. Out to 40, might spread out to something the size of an open hand. And Challenger 2 3/4 magnum slugs. And my calibrated shoulder determined the Federal 00 has more ass behind it than the Challenger slugs.

The Prairie Shot/Score slugs, as best I can tell, are an almost perfect clone of a Brenneke Slug.
Granted, I've never had any true Brenneke's myself but I have dismantled a Score Slug and it looks like the same construction of a Brenneke from images and reviews I have seen.

I've been researching these today, and have read just about everything on the Internet that has been mentioned. The actual slug that they used is called a Thug Slug by its manufacturer, Ballistic Products. The only thing that I have been unable to determine is if the slug is "swaged" (which I believe the Brenneke is) or "cast".

I suspect that "swaged" is better than "cast" ... but I'm not sure why. Perhaps someone could explain?

I cut open a SCORE slug. It's not the same as the Brenneke. More like a cool looking Foster slug. The Brenneke has a thicker chunk of lead in the middle.

Good to know,
I didn't have a Brenneke to compare it to but from the images I had to work with it certainly looked similar.
It's amazing no one has come out with something similar to or better than a Brenneke. Pretty much every other type of projectile has had some serious technological advancement over the years but slugs still seem to fall into the two basic types:
Brenneke or Foster

I'm guessing the manufacturing process to screw the was to the slug is mechanically and financially expensive in comparison to other methods?

SCORE slugs seem accurate enough, and no doubt they would be killer on deer when used within their parameters. A grizz stopper they are not...no more than a regular foster slug.

SCORE do have a unique design that would lend themselves to real show stoppers though. Put more lead in the middle, make sure it's pretty hard and you have close to a Brenneke

Hey Gatehouse,

Many thanks for those photographs, which did a perfect job of "filling in the gaps" and clearly answering the questions that I had in my mind. This is what CGN does so well. :)

I have 50 of these sitting in my safe, and they accompany me when I am in bear country. If you do plan on shooting them, you better be prepared to have a sore shoulder for a few days. 3 or 4 rounds is all I can comfortably shoot, and even then I will still have a bruise.
