Vz-58 vs sks

Does the manufacturer or variant of the VZ58 come into play?

FSN (??)
CZH2003
CZ858
CAI VZ58
CSA VZ58

I would love to get my hands on a CZ858 non chrome lined barrel for sub $700 bucks. I hope they get imported and are legal again. I wonder if the CSA vz58 is as good quality....

I have a Russian SKS and CSA VZ but it's in .5.56 with short barrel. VZ (esp CSA) is a much nicer gun I'd probably get rid of the SKS if I could get close to what I paid for it 4 years ago but it's not worth selling for what I spend on a light Costco trip :D

wut? I was making a point that the surplus rifles are sturdier than the vz58.

Except the fact that getting run over by a truck likely won't knock a vz out of commission, and such a test is not useful at all for our purposes as Canadian gun owners who won't likely ever do more than take their guns to the range or out hunting, much less run them over in a truck heavy enough to destroy their rifles.

Actually, the wood stock on the sks is the most likely thing to break, IMO.

I have two SKS's and one zv.58.... As soon as my vz was in my hands the SKS's became instant safe queens. I will always keep my SKS as every Canadian should have one. The VZ, is so light compared to the SKS, has a short stroke piston which means as a semi you can shoot it faster, much easier to clean after corrosive ammo as there is no gas tube to worry about, Inserting the mag with bolt closed is qucker and easier function. My SKS stripper clips run like a dream in it. Last but not least, everyone tries to make thier SKS's look like an AK, Tapco knows this and thats why they sell so much crap thats not needed; VZ.58 is everything an AK is plus more (yes I know they operate differently hense the "more"

That's the biggest thing. We're talking pounds too, not ounces. The sks is great, I own several, but the vz58 is an improvement in every measurable way.

So I have some gun funds waiting around and have been thinking of getting a VZ58. Problem is I already have a 1954 Izzy SKS, it shoots very well. So would getting a VZ58 be redundant considering I have a SKS, or is the VZ58 appreciably different that I would notice

same ammo, same accuracy, same 5 rounds,....redundant.

^^neah that's like saying who revolvers or two semi-autos in came caliber are redundant. but he'll probably want to sell the SKS later....

Quit f**kin around and buy both. Life's too short to ponder affordable toys.
Yeah, I don't get this whole redundancy concern. If you can't afford or appeciate each of these rifles for what they are then a new hobby is likely in order. Because in their own respect, both are good rifles, both are fun rifles, both are cheap rifles. (Yes, under 1K is cheap). If you disagree, well...read the bit about a new hobby again...

The most I have spent on a gun to date is $600, so $1000 is a purchase I'm going to think about a bit. If a $1000 is pocket change to you then you are in very good financial shape, I however have a young family, house payment, etc. So a $1000 item is not a purchase that is taken lightly, I want to make sure I'm getting the most bang for my buck.

You could put a tapco stock & mag into your SKS, then sell it on the EE for $999.99 {since those 2 things magically make them worth that} Apparently! +;) Then you will be able to afford the VZ! I've alwayz has SKS's, but after reading this thread, I'm turned on buy the VZ. Isn't certain models on the chopping block? I'm guessing most are fine to buy/sell then?

Yes, I understand. I have a young family and bills too. Im sure I'm no better off finacially than you are. Do I live paycheque to paycheque? No. But that is from working a lot and hard, not based on a hourly rate or from being cheap. And no its not pocket change, your words, not mine.
As we know, the price of a $600 firearm doesn't stop at $600. Feeding it, maintaining it and any accessories added easily pushes exponentially.
