I will be getting into 3 gun next year so there are a few more items I need before then. I have a ton of pmags but the 5 round capacity pretty much rules them out if I want to be competitive correct?

I can't decide between getting the LAR mags with the aluminum mag extensions, or getting the PCV 50 beowulf mags. I have heard some mixed reviews on the beo mags about them 'flexing' and the plastic feed lips not being durable enough for competition use. Either option would cost 50$ per so price is not a factor.

Do I go with a metal mag arguably more durable that will definately drop free but sacrifice mag capacity? Or go with plastic and hope they drop free and get the extra 4 round per mag capacity? I know some will say to check out your local matches to see what people are running first, but the next matches in this area I want to be shooting so I am hoping for some of you experienced Canadian 3 gunners to help me out. Thanks guys!

Find out mag capacity rules for your local 3 gun first. Some only permit 5 rounds so your Pmags may be fine.

I use LAR and .50 mags. With our local division rules I only load 10 in the .50 mags to avoid being in Open.

The .50 mags drop free nicely when they're empty. My LAR mags have either Magpul Ranger plates or gsDesigns 3D printed extensions.

At the last 3gun match that we held, I commented to the guys about how I saw so many issues with the PCV mags that any advantage they gave over LARs was more than lost. LARs are not always 100% reliable out of the box either but at least they can be tweaked a bit and made reliable. The PCV mags are not well made and I think the second gen mags are worse from a reliability standpoint than the first.
The PCV mags may be fine shooting from the bench and if the extra capacity is worth the price tag then I'd say grab a few. But in a competition when you are under the clock and being hard on your gear, they will let you down and that's no fun at all. Maybe if they come out with a gen 3 that is reliable (and priced appropriately) I would grab some but right now I'd suggest you pass.

It is frustrating that we have to put up with sh!tty mags or ones that are overpriced all because of stupid mag cap laws when everyone's Pmags would function just fine unpinned or even pinned to the comparable capacity of a 50 Beo mag....the fact that a Beo mag is legal but a Pmag holding the same number of rounds is not has got to rank up near the top of the stupidest Canadian firearms laws. Sorry for the rant, couldn't help myself! Have fun jumping into 3gun next year...it is a heck of a lot of fun no matter what mags you run!

Lars are great and reliable. My first gen PVCs ran great, but the second gen where junk. I finally found some metal AA Beowulf and run those. There are some on the EE if you are willing to pay. I like the full length and the extra capacity. To me it was worth it and they run great. Otherwise I would stick with Lars and an extension.

I run the 50 mags when the stage starts with rifle loaded. If a reload is required I switch to lar mags with S&J pulls on them. The plastic mags just aren't reliable for a reload on the clock, but coming out of the gate when there's no rush to load they're manageable.

many of the pro 3 gunners in Canada are using this product from us

But we are almost always back ordered
I think CTCS in Vancouver is the only one with stock left at this time

I have both PCVs and LARs and I prefer the LARs with the mag extensions sold by S&J /CTCS. They are easy to grab from pouches and give it a bit of weight for dropping free.

With LARs there is a work in period and you might have to do some filing at the feed lips. After a couple years the ones I have are the ones I depend on.

The PCVs are good for a laugh at the range (if you want to annoy your neighbours) but I've had feed problems with them and they are plastic so not much you can do to work them in. So I don't use them. If they were METAL that would be glorious.

I didn't have any reliability issues with the PCV mags but they do need to be worked a bit to drop free. I always load the first mag to capacity and underload the rest by one. Did the same with LAR mags, though, so it's still 4 extra rds per mag.

Not to take this thread too far off topic but what makes someone a pro 3gunner in Canada?
Any in Ontario?

As for the topic at hand, I've always had good luck and reliability with my LAR mags.
Seen too many people have issues with the various 50 cal mags (even metal ones) to not even want to try them.
There is always a convenient spot to reload in a course of fire so I've never felt at a disadvantage.

Thanks so much guys! This information pretty much confirms what I had thought in the first place. Looks like I'll be picking up some LAR mags and the extensions. Still plan to buy one PCV beo mag to see for myself, and I like the idea of starting a stage (if permitted) with a beo mag.

As pauls said... strategic reloads will mitigate any capacity issues you think you have.

banger is a pro... No doubt.
I've seen him in action. Lol.

We've been shooting matches where 30/40/48 round mags are the norm... and really... If a guy plans his reloads I bet you could shoot just as well with a ten round mag.

Make sure you play with it to make sure it drops free even when empty.

I would also be interested in knowing who the "PRO" 3 gunners are in Canada!

I'd also like to know where all these 3-gun matches are happening... I mean how does one become a pro without actually shooting a match once in a while?

I guess the pros will be easy enough to identify at a match, as many of them are using the S&J mag extensions.
