Any long distance hunters here on the board? If so, what are you hunting? What distances are you taking shots? What calibre rifle do you use? Pics? Cheers fellow CGNer's,

Wow... surprisingly quiet... i will get it started...

If you ain't comfy with your shot don't take it......

And if the animal is far away and doesnt see you then you can get closer..... work for your game.....

I wouldn't call myself a long range hunter I have made some long shots according to some.. I have made 500 yard shots on coyotes with a 204. 470yard shot on a moose with 338winmag
425yards on a WT buck with the same 338wm 408 yard shot on a bighorn ram with a 270win. I also have a 600 yard rifle range out the front door and practice out to 600 a lot but I have never shot at an animal that far. Not saying it wont happen

Thanks for your reply Byron Wolf. Longest shot on a tuktu(caribou) was approx. just over 300 yards ... I wish to stretch that out to 600. I may shoot/hunt a muskox and try to shoot it way out as well.

I've got the gear and the experience and have taken a few long shots when there were no other options. Ibex 579, Whitetail 612, elk 600, ostrich 522. I'm sure there were a few others but those are the most recent. I don't purposefully hunt long-range but sometimes the long shots are all you are presented with. I've honed my gear to a point where it works well up close and personal and way out there if needed. It's fast and simple to use and well suited to the varied terrain I hunt. Perhaps I don't work hard enough for my game...who knows.

Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

I shot a moose at 1200yrds with a 243. bang flop didn't know what hit him.
right in the eye. between blinks to save the lovely eyelid meat

Not bad but I shot at a small whitetail buck at 1250 yards with 30 30. Perfect Texas heart shot but I timed it poorly. The deer had it's mouth open and the bullet went right through without doing any damage.

Faack never mind I forgot how stupid this site can get. Too many newbies & oldfarts with no thought to different ways of hunting. I'm out & the mods can lock this bull####e.

rem 7mm mag

Have shot deer at a 512 y rem 7mm mag 140gr Accubonds,IMR4350, at 3100 + Rem 700 SS 22 Barrel (cut back from 24") stock is Robertson Bedded by him. this might be the most accurate hunting rifle I have owned,I use a nightforce Benchrest scope 12x by 42x fired groups at 300y just over 1" off bench.

I have been shooting long range now for a couple years, learning curve is STEEP. I hope to get a shot at some distance soon, but it will be with in my ethics and I will not justify it to anyone. To date my farthest kill shot is just shy of 300 yards with a 25-06 at a coyote trying to hide behind an oak tree, he left just a little too much of his face exposed.
