Been looking at the exchange forum.... Curios if there's someone /anyone out there that wants a Deerfield bad enough to pay $1,500 for it? Thoughts? This is a rifle that sold for around $700 new.

One my very favorite go to rifles is my Ruger 44 carbine. Not exactly the model your speaking of but none the less I would not pay $1500.00 for one, or $1000 for one, at least not in this life time. Maybe I am just a cheap unrealistic SOB but that's my opinion.

Rotary mag 44's come up infrequently, and are awesome. Ultimately, it will sell for the most that someone here will pay. $1500 may be a touch steep though.

I would say $4-500 too steep... but who knows, there is an "I just gotta have it chump" in every crowd....

Me too I think. I might be convinced to part with $1000-1100 for one in excellent condition with extra mags though.

I guess I'm one of them chumps! lol:redface:
You would never find one for $500. unless Lady Luck was stuck on you like chite to a blanket.
I had been looking for years for a Deerfield and found nothing. Then Doug came up with the one I now have. I did have to bite the bullet!

Blank out a few words and this is a standard EE question.

That said, the rifle isn't made any more. Not saying that it drives up the price, but what's out there is all there is. You can't swing by your local gunshop and have one ordered in.

(E)

You misread my post... I said that the Deerfield listed at $1500 was $4-500 too steep... that would put a reasonable market values at $1000-1100... in as new condition.

I was not saying that you will find one for $4-500... cause that is not likely to happen with the current demand for Ruger Deerdield carbines... it is a gun that I would like to own... but certainly not at $1500... he can keep it and good luck.

The few that I've seen listed in the EE were too rich for my blood, though I'd fall over myself to pick up a nice one for $600. If you read the forums stateside, there's quite a few that wouldn't pay a dime over $450 for one. I'd probably have a first and second heart attack trying to get my wallet out to pony up only $450 for one.

This rifle is on my "bucket list" for sure, but I'm after the tube-mag version. I don't know enough about them to know what version came first/last, but I did see the one in question on the EE. I sort of understood that $900-$1,000 for a minty one was expected, but I've BEEN that "guy" who overpaid for things I just had to have so I know there must be other guys like me out there! I'm not there yet on the desire to own a Ruger 44, and may never be. My ceiling is probably around $700.

Hey hoytcannon~you don't happen to have an H&R single shot in 44 mag do you? :)

Thanks hoyt~but I don't have the luck you do finding rifles! lol Remember me asking you about an H&R 22 Hornet? :) My new .204R satisfied that itch this year, but I wouldn't mind finding an H&R in 44mag.

Sorry Buddy... all my pistol caliber Handi's are gone... but you wouldn't regret buying it if you spot one for sale.

I think the tube mag. version came out first in 60's and was called Deerslayer. Ruger stopped production because of a high cost of production and a patent dispute with Ithaca. They re-started their production in 90's (?) with rotary mag. as Deerfield.

Anyway, I stopped looking for them when they passed $800 for an excellent condition one.

My first one was a first year production, 1960 I do believe, as it had an aluminum butt plate and no cartridge cut off in the magazine. The second one is a later version as it has a plastic butt plate and the cartridge cut off. I hate chunky proud fit wood, thick pistol grips and sharp cornered wood so each one had the sock removed, reshaped, pistol grip slimmed and properly carved, wood to metal fit flushed and all sharp edges removed and then the whole stock sanded, filled and oil finished. The first one was stolen out of my hunt camp in 95, the second one is in my vault. Both have my company name burned into the barrel channel.
So if anyone comes across an early version of a Ruger carbine with a slimmed stock and the fore stock feels ripply to the hand, (I did that on purpose but it is not visible to the eye,) please let me know as there is only two like it in existence.

Lovely little bush guns, I had no idea the prices had escalated from expensive to ridiculous.

It depends on how easy it is for you to come up with the money. I'd like one, but for me, that amount of money costs too much so when I have it, I can always find something else I need or want more than that gun.

I think the dispute with Ithaca was not over patent but over the use of the name Deerslayer.

yes I did! Sorry about that. I feel better now. I'm right in that ball park with a little extra for the shipping & ins. I did get a spare mag and a nice B-day gift and some kind of black leather thing that has 2 slots in it and Velcro's together, it's about 2 1/2 - 3 inches long and about 1 inch in dia. I'm too embarrassed to ask Doug what the hell is it!
