400yd shots with a 22lr

More like 200"+ drop. Could be done, but not easily.

I have shot some groups [5-shot] that were less than 1" at 200M with a very accurate target 22 and first class target ammo. [Eley, Lapua and RWS]

I believe it, 1 round out of 100 I bet!
I shoot 180yds in strong wind. Have a 4'x4' archery target to shoot at. 12' paper every shot once dialed in.
400yds can be done, however I bet $1000 that it isn't every shot

Have you guys not seen clayne_b shoot his little cz scout at 600 yards? He was active here on the boards for a time and sure opened some eyes to the capability of the lowly 22 The only difference in shooting a 22 at 200 300 400 yards is drop and windage once you adjust for those it's not hard to hit what you are aiming at.

Think about it. The warning on the side of the box is there for a really good reason. The bullet can go a long way and do so consistently.

Interestingly enough most of these statements come from members with feedback of 3 or less he sent me a pm his hold over was 5" . As far as dangerous within a mile and a half that has no bearing on hitting a 5 " target at 400 yds . I have shot full bore out to 1000 yds with the 308 you need 42ft of elevation to hit the bull and that's with peep sights and military ammo never mind the wind age . When someone makes a statement on trajectory they had better know what the facts is . At 400yds with the 22lr roughly 250-275. " of drop .

400yds would be a true test for .22lr shooters. 5" at 400yds is a touch more than MOA. Sounds plausible enough in theory. I doubt (internet bravado...I know I can't!!!) I could consistently hit at that range, but I shoot in pits open to the winds. Maybe finding a huge, wind-free hangar to try it in to start, get good there, and then try to account for winds.

The winds themselves won't be consistent for the length of time it takes the bullet to travel those 400yds...a lot can happen to the bullet in that time. In the stickied ballistic charts, nothing is worked out to 400yds, but you can see how much deflection by 200yds in 10mph crosswind.

Again not impossible, but certainly very challenging. If I could manage to do it consistently, I certainly wouldn't sell the rifle I was doing it with.

One must remember that internet yards are keyboard variable.

Wish I could find the thread...many years ago one poster suggested a "fist sized hole" being made at 300yds with a nylon 66. It was responded to with something along the lines of "That's nothing, I shoot gophers in the eye from that distance, but time it so they don't blink. Don't wanna waste eyelid meat." (not exact quote but close)

The amount the bullet drops is not a concern. My black powder target rifles work very well at mid and long ranges. They have a midrange trajectory that would make modern target shooters laugh. But they'll hold vertical extremely well.

The main difference is that the .22lr bullet has a really poor ballistic coefficient and is affected a lot by the wind. Also any variance in muzzle velocity will kill accuracy far out.

200m is pretty easy with a .22lr, but I've never tried further.
