Anyone try the FAMAE SG542-1, 308 Win/7.62 NATO

I was looking at black rifles today and noticed one in .308. Was wondering if the accuracy on these are good enough to hunt with aswell.

From what I've heard they are accurate enough to hunt with but feelings are mixed as to whether they are worth the $3000. Fit and finish is not as good as the Swiss rifles and extra mags and parts are hard to come by.

Great user name. Makes me giggle every time I see one of your posts. Lol

If you're looking to spend that kind of money, take a look at the ATRS Modern Hunter if you haven't already. Semi auto .308, made here in Canada. The first batch is sold out, but the second batch is expected late 2015.

The ATRS modern hunter is s straight pull bolt action. Not a semi automatic. Dam nice gun though.

Unless the design has changed (I'll admit to not having looked at the thread for a bit) the modern hunter is semi auto, with the planned option to be able to turn off the gas port and go with straight pull bolt action should Rick figure out the specs in time to deliver the production run.

Back to the OP the FAMAE SG 542 has acceptable accuracy for hunting. As with any platform it's practice that get's you proficient ;).

When people compare it to a SAN they should keep in mind the equivalent SAN rifle, the SAPR, would be nearly double the price if we were able to purchase it on the civilian market. Fit and finish isn't SAN quality, but it's not the worst I've seen either.

See I never understood why the SAN was so much more expensive than the classic green. Double the price to up-size? And if that applied to the FAMAE guns, wouldn't the .223 rifles be $1500? Geez. I'd eat that up if they were that cheap.

I like that we're doing a picture thread now. Lets keep it up:

If the 540 were sub $2000 it'd be a no brainer. I still like the design but the problem it's facing is that people are comparing it to the last known value of a Classic Green. By today's exchange a Classic Green would be around $4100. The 540 and 542 are in fact coming in cheaper than a currently valued SAN "Classic" series rifle.

I don't understand the price jump to upsize to the SAPR either. Small price differences would be expected, but really until a person were to get their hands on the SAPR it'd only be speculation as to the price difference. For now I look at it as the price of a AR-15 vs a similar build quality AR-10, you can expect a price jump.

Picture thread? Challenge accepted TVPP :p

I've got a SG542, like it other than the loose gas block and the loose flash hider mine come with. Having those issues fixed.

I'm waiting to see if the RCMP really let us have the new ATR rifle, as in when people have them and are posting reviews.

It seems as though the lab has been told to delay any approvals as much as possible. I could be wrong but it simply would not take this long to examine submitted rifles. Current wait appears to be around 2.5 years.

RE: SAPR

To make a 7.62 gun, it needs a new set of dies to make the receivers as the 7.62 is different from the 5.56. This means a lot of new fixtures are needed to create the line.

And the sale volume of 7.62 is lower in unit, this means unit price goes up.

Kinda like the reason why the F35 becomes so expensive.

Base starts at $3100 and goes up from there depending on what you want out of the build IIRC. Go to the ATRS site and download the build sheet, it isn't hard to build a $4200 +/- a few $ rifle depending on your tastes.

As nice as it looks that's just too much for a semi auto 308 just because it's non restricted.
I understand it's going to be light years ahead of the Famme but that one is overpriced as well in my opinion.
I would gladly pay $2500 for the base ATRS rifle and $3000 or maybe a little more for one with a fancy barrel but for $4000 I can think of better places to spend my money.

For the money at the sacrifice of some accuracy and used 542 or XCR-M seem like money better spent leaving a lot of cash left over for ammo and mags.
Personally I'll just stick to my AR-10 for semi auto 308 and use something else for non restricted play time.
