I'm looking for opinions from people with experience with these two rounds. Trying to decide on a 44 mag lever or 3030 as my primary brush rifle, shot will be anywhere from 30 yards to no further than 100 yards. All advice is greatly appreciated. Once again 100 yards will be the absolute farthest shot

If you're just talking from a cartridge standpoint, then 30-30 gets my vote. That being said, if a Ruger 77/44 was an option, i'd go 44 mag (great bush gun)

Under 100 either will be fine... the 160 FTX in .30/30 and 225 FTX in .44 are equally accurate to 100 out of my 94's...

I can say from experience that 35Rem is better than either as a bush gun by a wide margin.
Load some Speer 220gr FP to 2100+ fps in your 336 Marlin rifle and you will have superior performance and accuracy as well.

Something to keep in mind, I have heard of small gun shops refusing to sell pistol ammo to people without a restricted licence. Go with the most common one.

That's pretty silly on their part when even CT sells pistol ammo.

The .44 cartridge is shorter, so a tube magazine holds more of them. Due to it's higher velocity, a longer shot might be easier with a .30/30. The .44 is loaded with a smaller powder charge, so doesn't need as long a barrel to get up to speed. If shooting with iron sights, a longer barrel with a longer sight radius makes shooting easier, which benefits the .30/30. If using factory ammo, modern .30/30 loads have been down graded somewhat, but .44s from those same manufacturers tends to be pretty warm. Have fun deciding.

I have both (Marlins). Either are fine, but as noted above, for ammo availability and price, the 30-30 would be the way to go. If you go 30-30, please do not by a Winchester 94. Compared to the Marlins they are a poor choice IMO. Marlins are superior in function, accuracy, and scope acceptance. The end.

LOL.... good one!

Scope acceptance... sure. The rest is hogwash... I like my Marlins... I LOVE my 94's...

Both the 30-30 & .44 mag. are up to the job. If the area you intend to hunt in has grizzlys, then a more potent lever gun like a .444 Marlin .450 Marlin or .45-70 would be advisable.(Unless yer hunting after the critters have bedded in for winter.)
The make of rifle is solely up to the hunters preference...natch. Happy shopping.;)

My favorite.....Winchester 94 in .375 Win.
