VZ 58 left charging handle

CSA makes them but i haven't found anyone carrying them yet, they have them right on their website

I couldn't find it. I think it would be cheaper and easier to modify my existing bolt. I was thinking of drilling and threading it, then welding on a bolt.

Are there side mounts that are far back enough to clear the extra left handle, maybe this?

Seems to me that there were a few folks having issues with the charging handle coming off if it's only welded.

I believe the advices was to drill into the bolt carrier, add threads, thread in a improvised charging handle, and then weld.

I wouldn't want the charging handle breaking free and hitting me in the face.

This is of course information I read on the internet so take it how you like. I wanted a left side charging handle but I don't think it's worth the cost or effort.

I think a member on here will make one for you but I didn't feel it was a worthwhile mod.

Honestly I'd just modify one. Spares are easy to come by. I got a great deal on all the loose parts for a vz at a local gun shop. Basically most of the gun minus the receiver and a bit of hardware for 100 bucks. Including the entire bolt assembly.

Just chop off the old one neatly with something like a dremel, flip it and get someone to weld it on the other side, get out your sandpaper and clean it all up nice then get it refinished. The refinishing might be kind of a problem. You don't want to pay someone 200 bucks to parkerize one little piece. So you might have to wait or get in on a deal with someone who's getting a gun refinished and can throw your bolt cover in. Friend of mine was getting his pistol refinished and I was considering doing exactly the same thing with a stock adapter that I had to modify.

I wouldn't do it to my original piece personally, but like I say it should be easy enough to find yourself another one so you don't have to maul yours.

Actually I already got it all done, finished, and tested out. I drilled and tapped a hole on the other side and welded a bolt. Then ground it to the shape I wanted, looks like a skinny version of an AK handle. Then sanded it and painted it with a very tough bake-on black enamel.
It turned out great and cost me a couple of cents for the bolt. The paint I had already.

I also got the VOMZ mount but it was too tall so I had to lower it and replace the rail with the old one I had. Used the same bake-on enamel on that too. It works great and I can take the mount off easily if I need to.

Thanks.

Do you have access to machine shop tools or were you able to do this at home?

Any pictures?

Smoothed head on a 1/4" bolt. Drilled and tapped a hole in the carrier. Tightened it in with some red Loktite.

This short little bolt handle is perfect for being able to release the bolt with the left had.

Here are some pics.

I used a 5/16 bolt and did it all at home. Had my friend weld it on for me. Took me about 2 hours of work.

Do you know if the bolt carrier is cast?? did your friend say anything about that ? I want to chop off the original charging handle, and weld on a perpendicular one that ive grinded to look more AKish ... but welding cast metal is beyond my skill level if the bolt carrier is indeed cast :/
