I've been inspired by Clobbersauras' pistol challenge to see if there's any interest for one here. A link to print the targets is available in the pistol forum. 100 yards, ten rounds. My first target was to see where I was hitting at 100 yards,

A little high. But easily adjusted :d

Getting closer.

Not too bad, 93, 2x's

and final try, 94, 2x's

I'm in. I am making Mexican Match with Sierra 174 MK that shoot better than my milsurp ammo. Just got some of the 185gr heavy milsurp to try, too.

1944 Izhevsk PU. Targets(100m) are a mix of 148 Bulgarian ball and 174 gn Sierra with 42.5 gn H4895. To bad about the forth shot on the top right - just missed the "my PU shoots <1 MOA all day long". Sooner or later even a blind squirrel finds a nut.

Took my new to me Mosin PU out for the first time today. Spent some time getting it sighted in to the best of my abilities, and as requested by OP here is 10 rounds @ 100m.

This is my first attempt with Bulgarian silver tip surplus. 8" max spread

My second attempt with Norinco bulk. 5" max spread

Hopefully I get lots of time with this rifle over the winter, I'm sure the rifle is capable of MUCH better lol

!944 Izhevsk. Left is Bulgarian 148 ball (1970). Right is Sierra 174 HPBT with 41 gn of H4895. Happy with the milsurp but the hand loads are off. I reduced from 44 gn to 41 hoping that the ball and hand loads would have the same MPI. No luck and the reduced velocity is not good for accuracy.

Another try... Bulgarian 148. Top right looks "better" but is still 3". I added 100 mm of linseed oil soaked canvas around the barrel centered on the front band. The first few shots (left target) are the barrel and stock finding its place. The wrap looks promising but I've had a few false starts which things that looked like they were working for a few targets but in the long run they didn't work out.

How long are you waiting between shots?

1-2 minutes. IMO the upper right target represents about the best that can be realistically expected from Milsurp ammunition. I have 3 Molot PUs. The 1943 Tula has a very good bore but shows little promise for being a 2 MOA rifle even with the best ammunition. I have about 800 rounds through it so far. The 1944 Izhevsk I am shooting now might be a 2 MOA rifle with good ammunition - too early to say.

This kind of challenge is good because it really reflects what the rifles (and shooters) can do. Shoot five rounds at five targets on the same page, or 10 shot groups weeds out the cherry pickers that post the best group that they ever shot as somehow representative. I expect most of the PU shooters are getting rather similar results. There may be a few 1 MOA PUs out there but it is a matter of luck if you happen upon a 70 years old rifle of this design that can shoot 1 MOA. A Mosin PU is a racing camel - fast for a camel, but it ain't no horse.

Very nice group! Tell me more about linseed oil and canvas.

Some other threads have a description and pictures of "barrel wrap" that are from an original Soviet sniper manual. They used oiled canvas wrap to preload the fore stock (the opposite of "free floating"). The position shown is between the two stock bands with a bias to the front. I tried this and, other than make the forestock bands difficult to assemble, it didn't do much good on my '43. This time I tried just a single layer of canvas (no overlap) 100 mm long that extends from the handguard rearward. The principle is that pressure applied to this area stabilizes the barrel harmonics.
The linseed oil is to prevent moisture absorption by the canvas; pretty much any oil will be fine.

I will give it a go. This is my sight in target with two groups using the writing at the bottom of the page as an aiming point. Ammo is a cast 213grn bullet from a cbe mold over 12.5grns of unique.

This one shows some groups shot with the cast load on the left & milsurp on the right. The light was waning by the time I shot the milsurp groups. If I could hold it steady this rifle would be quite lethal.

Three or four months ago I bought a box of Hornady Vintage Match 7.62X54R ammo. Thirty-four bucks plus tax for 20; 2 bucks a shot!. I couldn't make up my mind whether I should shoot them, or be buried with them. I'm pretty cheap and I wasn't sure I could focus through the scope with the tears in my eyes.

I shot 10 today and they are far superior to milsurp and my current hand load. I will be examining the remaining 10 very carefully. The product number is 80518. Not for everyday shooting but one box is worth it to see what your rifle can really do. Back to the LGS and wouldn't you know it, the other box that sat there for 4 months got sold on Saturday.

Match is one the right (obviously). The flier is my fault - last shot with people waiting to put up targets. Left is 42 g 4895 and 174 g Sierra - flier is .....well...., a flier - a bad workman blames his tools.

Heres my two attempts. The Canada ammo target has only four holes at 2 5/8", as I ran out of ammo , The other target is todays attempt with a 10 shot group, all with surplus ammo, @ 3" group.
