1st SKS and I'm having trouble already!

Hi! I'm looking for help, I just brought home my first SKS from Canadian tire and when I took it out of the box I pulled the bolt back to make sure there were no surprises inside and not I can't get the bolt to release! I figured pulling the trigger with my hand on the cocking handle would release the bolt, but it's not working. Yes, the safety is off! Any suggestions?

tear it down and clean it there's a ton of info in here and youtube on how to do it
 
That is called a magazine catch. The way how it works is when your rifle magazine is empty the follower pushes up on a little metal bit to keep the bolt to the rear. It does two things, one lets you know your rifle is out of ammo, and two allows you to reload the rifle (as if there was no magazine catch reloading a stock SKS would be next to impossible).

As said above just open the magazine up and pull back on the bolt, it then should release.
 
Not going to be able to learn enough from the interwebz for every weapon system that comes into your hands. My first AR-15 was a pita even watching the endless videos.

I have also done impulse purchases where I had no idea I was bringing a new firearm home let alone watching a damn video first.

This makes no sense, sorry... I don't see anything wrong with learning the the intricacies of a given firearm after you get it... Pretty hard to practice stripping a rifle or even learn exactly how it operates until you actually have it...

OP, I used my SKS a whole summer before I learned to drop the magazine to close the bolt.. I always just pushed the follower down with my other hand, a pretty awkward task... Saw the Jerry Miculek video of him running an SKS and forehead got smacked:)
 
Make sure when you shake the bolt that the firing pin rattles freely, but the better you clean All that 60 year old cosmo off, the better it will work! And at the same time you teach yourself about the rifle,, all good have fun!

Fixed. I see not reason to avoid purchasing a gun before knowing how it works. However, researching it might help to understand what you are buying so you know you'll like it.
