So now that I have a savage 17 coming...interested in specific scope recommendations.
My CZ 453 has a 5-15power, adjustable objective. Works fine, but let's hear other options.
What scope do you find best for max versatility on a 17 hummer... lots of magnification or not? Side focus, or objective lens focus? Non-focussing at all?
25m out to 200 m shooting. Do it all!

burris c4 on my 17, great for target and hunting...AO but usually leave it set at 100 for hunting, or adjust for target shooting

edit: should mention it's the 4.5-14x42

Need more info... Hunting or paper only? Budget?

If you want to wring out the guns accuracy potential, then you will need magnification... minimum 4-16X, but better yet 6-24X. A pure hunting gun does not need as much magnufication, a 3-12X or 4.5-14X will be fine... I am partial to Leupold scopes... the VX-2's are the best bang for your buck.

I have a vortex viper 3-9x40 on mine. There is no ao on that scope. I shoot gophers form 5 feet to 200 yards with it and haven't had a problem with not enough magnification yet. Its also a nice light package to carry when walking the fields.

I have a 6-24. It's too much. Never really go past 16x. Things get dark fast, gophers are hard to track etc. 3-16x range for me is ideal.

Hunting mostly, short to long range, but also paper. lol
There's really no budget, lucky me, except that the choices are dictated by what makes sense without being stupid - I don't mind shelling out for quality, but at the same time I'm not in the business of giving money away either... Are there any parallax issues close in, if you don't get AO? If Leupold, I'm thinking 4.5-14 AO would be decent.
I tend to agree with Lead hammer, 24x might be too much of a good thing?
Also I do have a Leupold 2.5-8 on hand, I could try that.

No budget... hunting....

Get a Leupold VX-3 4.5-14X40mm with AO... you won't regret that purchase on a hunting Hummer

when I had a 17 i used a bushnell banner 3.5-10x38 with ao. It was great for the money and I've always thought of banners as really good for around $100. It held zero well and was very reliable. It also had a bdc turret which worked very well for the long shots.

Bushnell DOA 600 reticle
Vortex Dead-Hold MOA reticle

Both have near Identical hash marks.

On a .17 HMR, when zeroed at 50yds, is as follows:

Center crosshairs = dead on at 50 yds AND 100yds.
Next hash mark = 150yds
Next hash mark = 200yds
Next hash mark = 250yds
Top of bottom post = 300yds

Both are excellent .17HMR scopes. Vortex being slightly better but at 3x the price.

I have the exact same scope with the top mounted bdc turret on my Marlin 17HMR and its great. The Banner is a low priced scope that wouldn't stand up very well on a high powered rifle's recoil but it is fine on the 17.

I have a Burris 3-9x40 with mildots on my savage BVSS and in my opinion its almost perfect. If a gopher is too small to line up on at 9 power its too far for the cartridge to be accurate if there's any slight breeze. It keeps me from wasting ammo on near impossible shots!

Falcon Menace 4.5-18x56 on a Marlin 917

The 4.5 makes it still usable for the odd offhand shot but those are rare with the gun, its usually on a rest or bipod. The 18x is nice for identifying whether or not the suspicious looking lump is a gopher or a rock in disguise. Also handy when sighting it in, ability to see the holes in the target saves a lot of walking.

Where and how much? BDC? Repeatable turret?
