Here is my NM with a S&B 5X2556 PMll, this is a wicked rifle giving around MOA with factory, i did not reload for it yet but it got potential, here a little range time with my NM and a group with factory Lapua Scenar 155 gr, distance 100 yards... JP.

I'm going to use Hornady match 168gr for sight in. Then I'll use a batch of 12 reloads for a ladder test.
Hornady 155 hrs
Varget starting at 40.4 - 42.6 .2 per round
Lapua brass (new)
CCI 200 primers
Can't wait to see how it will perform

Yep, that me talking, i like spending time with this RO, he is a good guy... JP.

Thanks for the kind words! I love the pics of how you guys have set up your rifles. I think i am going to leave this baby with iron sights as the whole reason I ended up with a M1A was because I didn't want to pay 150 bones for NM sights, re-barrel, etc my Norc to have a good shooter. Here is a pic with its smaller brother the Mini-30 (I have this configured with a lightweight scope to be a nice truck gun) It is too bad that the M1A doesn't come with a SS receiver as it would really look sharp going full SS vice just the barrel.

Close up on the actions:

For starting loads, I am going to try some Hornady 168gn BTHP with 4895 powder (either H or IMR I have both). If it doesn't work I may go to a lighter load like a 155 gn Scenar or perhaps a 155gn AMAX depending on availability. I was tempted to post some pics of the Norinco but I don't want the thread to turn into a pissing match as I think both rifles have their role. Lately it seems that anytime the two appear in the same thread people start getting all aggro. :) As for bedding, I am debating whether I should bed this rifle or not - I prefer the ability to switch stocks as I will have two of them and I am not sure I want to marry this action to one of them yet. If it looks like I prefer one of the stocks, one may get permanently affixed...

Cheers guys and keep up the good shooting!

That rifle looks absolutely awesome.

I've been half-assed looking for a nice Garand, but this may have won me over. I too have played with the norc long and shorty at the local shop, but I really didn't like the sloppy look and feel to the action (they looked like they badly needed to be custom-fit...very sloppy). If you had the choice, would you guys grab one of these or keep on the quest for a Garand? (and yes, I know "get both" is a good option too) ;)

I would say that you should go with what you like action and calibre-wise. Myself, I don't feel that Garands represent the value that they used to have but I was the guy that walked by $180 M1s in Edmonton way back when you could get three of them for under $550 out the door. I am seeing Milsurp Garands starting to approach the price of a new Springfield and I question the logic of paying 12-1500 for a common issue milsurp rifle but it doesn't mean that they aren't worth what people are paying for them. I like the idea of buying a new rifle but if you really want a Garand you may end up unsatisfied if you get an M1A. I do recall that SAI for a short while was making new manufacture M1 Garands so you could always compromise and get a relatively new M1 Garand. Just my 2 cents.

Im wanting to mount glass on mine, but retain you irons. So now to decide what to use. Thinking Basset mount if I can get my hands on one. Who has experience with the Basset mounts, and what model was preferred?

Unless you are a purist and a traditionalist - forget the M1. I love them as much as the next guy (and maybe a little more) but the kind of prices they command are unreasonable from a purely practical standpoint. Forget the Norc too - compared to the Springfields ... well, there is no comparison. Take the M1A out of the box, fire nine rounds to zero it - and you are away to the races. Boys at M14.CA are making absolutely stellar scope mounts for them now too. Mine does 1.5" groups with my carefully home brewed ammo - the standard 168 match BTHP sitting on 41.5 gr. of H4895. This is a rifleman's rifle. The Norc is for the armourers - they are the only guys that can make these junkers actually shoot - the tinkerers and the bubbas will run amok every time with the Norc. That's my two cents - your mileage may vary.
