who still shoots long barrel shotguns .well lead was the go to load for ducks and geese we all shot 30 and 32 inch full choke shotguns .some guys even had the bolt 12g with 32 34 and even 36 inch barrels .my buddy a retired dairy farmer had a marlin model 120 pump 12g three inch mag with a 40 inch barrel and boy would that thing shoot .anyway one day he came over for coffee and pulls out this shotgun and gives it to me as he cannot us it anymore for hunting with steel and he wanted me to have it ,great ,I have been using it for turkey shoots and have been able to win with it ,now a lot of the shoots have a 30inch barrel limit or you can shoot in a custom class .I can still win a few in the custom class ,I would really like to find a shorter barrel for this gun to get a little more us out of her as she has a very strong action and I would love to us it for deer hunting with slugs .anybody still shoot the real long legged girls anymore .Dutch

My 10ga's are all 30" and I still have the 30" trap for my superx1's . 30" and 34" in 1100's and 870's
Also a long cooey 84 12ga down there Think it may be a 36 but cannot remember
Cheers

Spent some of last fall with a new (to me) Remington 1100 Magnum with a 30" barrel. It did well for me. I have a 870 Wingmaster Magnum with a 30" tube as well. Both choked FULL of course.

I like the longer barrels myself. My favorite 12ga is my Winchester Model 12 Heavy Duck gun with 32" barrel. But I generally use my Browning Gold with a 30" barrel, I have always shot better with a long barrel and if I was going to buy a new shoot gun tomorrow I would try to get it with a 30" barrel.

Barrel length basically has zero to do with range, velocity, pattern etc....it's basically all about how the shotgun swings and points.

But isn't swing and point important . It also provides the longer sighting plane another plus and most will pick up some targets in the clays games for these reasons
Also find it makes a noticable difference in the felt recoil

Bingo!

Bingo!,.....these 2 replies should be morfed into 1. Sheephunter is right and 3macs1 explanes what it means.

I have smashed hundreds of trap clays with my 32" model 12 and have the trophies to prove it. I also have a 26" barrel model 12 but could only shoot about 3/4's as good with the short barrel,....same gun but shorter and lighter.

I find the longer barrel is a lot quieter as well as less recoil .and boy does that 40 inch barrel ever swing nice you would never know it is that long once you have her up to your shoulder ,I just wish I could shoot steel thru her and kill some geese ,Dutch

Get her fitted with some thin wall choke tubes Dutch. I did that to a few of my 12ga longer barrels
Was not that expensive either and I didnot have to send them state side to Briley either like the other gauges
Have never seen a 40" . Must be super cool
Cheers

If I ever found an older gun, even a single shot with a 36 or 40" barrel Id take it and fix it to shoot skeet. Way back when, 36" barrel shooting SSG with #0 buck... Let's just say you could shoot a lot at extremely long distances

I had an long barreled SP-10, 3macs1 has it now. I replaced it with a 26 inch barreled SP-10 and I do much better with it. Didn't lose any range, but it swings a lot quicker for me.

Yep and 3macs1 will die with it :) Was a dummy and sold my 1st sp-10 in around 93 when I bought my 1st browning gold 10ga and knew within a month I made a big mistake
Was happy happy happy to get another ;)

Between the original owner (my dad) and me, this 30" Winchester Model 50 has almost 60 years of putting food on the table. Good odds it has another 60 years of doing the same.

Don't knock what works.

The length of the barrel has nothing to do with the pattern or the range, but longer barrels certainly do dampen sudden movements, thus helping with the swing. As for longer sighting plane, you are not supposed be looking at at the barrel. You don't aim a shotgun. You point it !
