Owning a Handgun..... pain in @ss or not

I have never had a problem with the CFO. One time I purchased a pistol in the morning, and by afternoon I had an ATT to take it home. Sure, sometimes you have to wait on hold for a while. But that's no different than any other telephone based service. That's what headsets or speaker phones were made for.

There is something to be said for that. A lot, actually. Rights are lost when they aren't used. Plus you get the fun of shooting one.

That's the whole reason I bought an AR almost a year ago, it was my first restricted, I've never shot it... simply bought it to exercise my rights....and because it was a "Dirty Ugandan" modern milsurp! :)

For me it is kinda a pain. Clubs are often full or have a waiting list to join, you have to pay for a full membership, you have to pay to take another in house safety course, pass that, shoot a few times, then apply for your att, wait a few more wks and you are good to go... Its more time, money, and effort and seems almost more annoying than the initial licensing process. I know it's not THAT hard, just annoying I guess.

I opted to just shoot my non restricteds as a drop in at the club and when I'm on crown land. Been a blast the past two summers. Although I have shot my friends handguns at the club.

Now, that being said, you should buy at least one handgun to piss off a liberal and I did. It's collecting dust in the cabinet but hopefully I will find the time to jump through the hoops eventually or maybe with any luck this silly att business will be removed soon. First step is buying one, may as well do that to get the ball slowly rolling.

This coming from a guy with very litter knowledge and just got into the sport last year (both PAL and RPAL a few months apart) I live in NB

Once I received my RPAL went looking for a handgun. Decided on a ruger sr9 purchased from a store about 2 hours away. Once all the transfers were completed (about a week). I received a call that the transfer was complete and that they would be mailing it out to me that day. I asked if I could pick it up and they said I would need a short term ATT. I called the CFO and asked if I could get one, and the lady said that the seller stated it was to be shipped and the info was all done and nothing they could do at that time. I just said well ok its sad cause I'd really like to have it that day (like anything else when its new you want it right away!). SHe was very nice on the phone. I was working away and heard my fax ring, in the fax was a STATT!!! they actually sent me one when they said there was nothing they could do. Also the store when I first asked them not to ship and I wanted to go, they told me that I probably wouldn't get an att.

Jumped in my car and drove right away to grab it! (store was happy, because I ended up spending a bunch more money there too!) So I can say I don't have anything bad to say about the CFO in NB at least! they have always seemed to treat me right, also got my LTATT for 2015 very fast near Christmas time too.

I'm sure it's much easier out west, but so far, I've been completely satisfied with the way paperwork has been done for me here in Montreal. Last handgun I bought was december 22; store sent the ATT and registration paperwork and I got the ATT a week later and the registration first week of january, dated for approval and all for december 24th.

So far, I can't say it's a pain in the ass, but more a sore on the wallet :D

The stupidest thing I have ever heard at the range was: "Im getting rid of my handguns because of the hassle" I asked what hassle? "Just being always watched by police and what not. I was like um okaaaaaaay. Fudd Idiocy

Well now that you mention it, my exp with the AB CFO was equally easy and painless. They gave me an LTATT for the whole province. I can come and go as I want to any range in AB now whenever I want, done deal. It was no problem and they were very nice on the phone every time I called. AB CFO paperwork was emailed to me the day I sent them my membership card (family membership bought for $40/yr!) and the Feds had theirs to me within about 10 days from the time of purchase.

Got lucky I guess.

Ditto. I have had zero problems with range memberships, CFO's etc.

The only part that sucks is waiting for your registration to arrive in the mail.

Got my ATT on like the 5th but still waiting on the damn registration so i can actually USE it...

It really depends on your preferences. The main difference in owning and using a restricted vs a non-restricteds is the following:
-restricteds are registered
-paperwork for ATTs and Registry and range membership
-making sure proper storage and transport regs are met
-use only at CFO certified ranges
-travel to and from the range has to be "relitively direct"

Each one of those things has a small check list of things on its own to complete, as I just listed it in a broad sense of the idea.

Don't forget the ATT when you talk to your MP next time. The CPC could have done away with ATT's altogether. They took a look at the entire program, the burden it is on gun owners, and they decided they wanted to keep it but just modify it a bit. I can see them keeping the registration because to do away with AR and handgun registration's would have made for a large political criticism from fear mongering anti's, but keeping the ATT? That's the one thing they should have scrapped completely. Anyway, don't mean to derail the thread, just my .02 cents.

To the OP: I couldn't tell you if it's worth it or not. I live in Ontario and have had my RPAL for a few years but don't own anything restricted. Every time I think about buying one I realize I won't be able to take it up north or go into the bush with it and so far I have just not bothered.

It only hurts the first time, then the @ss pain subsides as you get used to it.

Really, you lock them up and keep the paper trail current and it's fine.

The most irritating aspect to me is the STATT business. It's the cherry on top of a heap of steaming ridiculous

Not really any more of a hassel over NR. Although if you are east of MB, it probably is.

First hangun took 10 days to bring home since I was out of town, second one I took home the day of purchase. My rifle that is coming, no one even ask me what I was planning to use it for. Bought it online and reg was in my hands in under two weeks.
