PDW builds - Lets see them, and share results

Hello all!!

I finally have something to add of my own to this thread!!

I took the plunge and built my own personal PDW

AbH7inch-s-01_zpsb6a87d89.jpg

Specs as follows:

Upper
  • ATRS Eliminator with Crush washer
  • Aero Precision 7.5" Barrel (dimpled for gas block seat)
  • New DPMS Pistol-length Gas Tube with pin
  • Aero Precision Micro Low profile gas block (1.0" seat)
  • Samson Star C Carbine Quad Rail
  • Lightly used PSA mil-spec BCG
  • Aero Precision A-4 upper receiver with feed ramp cuts
  • Badger Ordinance low profile Ambidextrous charging handle
  • LMT fixed detachable same plane front and rear sight set

Lower
  • Tactical Innovations lower
  • DPMS Select small parts kit with Colt Take down pins
  • Mil-spec fire control group
  • Standard A-2 grip
  • H-3 carbine buffer and mil-spec carbine spring
  • Commercial buffer tube assembly
  • KAC QD sling attachment Point
  • Commercial spec CTR

Optic

  • Aim Point Micro H1 with 4 moa dot
  • ADM modular mount with SoCom riser for Lower 1/3 co-witness

It still needs Rail covers, some kind of front grip, an Ambi Selector, and there is a set of KNS anti-rotation pins in the bin if needed, but for the most part, I am very pleased with the results.

Hope to have a range report to follow in the next day or so.

Hope to do live fire test latter this week.

regards

AbH

I love compact, short-barreled guns :) My three PDW-type guns, from largest to smallest:

XCR-M Micro 7.62x51

Vz58 compact in 7.62x39

And my favorite, XCR-L Micro in 7.62x39

The XCRs both run 100%, though there is some truth to the Loctite jokes. The Vz has been a bit finicky with mags, but I've finally got it running pretty well too :) it needs to be run dripping wet to function well.

not sure if 11.5 qualifies as PDW, not quite a carbine either...

BCM 11.5 URG with DD Omega X sitting atop a ATRS GEN4 lower. Aimpoint, FailZero BCG, BCM Medium charging handle and Magpul/Umbrella plastics.

What kind of experiences have people had with these stocks? Decent cheekweld? Extend and collapse smoothly and easily? Solid? Guns sfunction ok with the shorter tube?

Cheekweld and ergos are poor for me (I'm 6'1"+) but this stock is about compactness, not comfort. Extend and collapse is smooth, easy, and fast - it is either open or closed. Mine functions perfectly with every ammo I've tried...Knowing that shorties can be temperamental, I was a bit concerned when I installed this stock but I've had zero issues and she cycles reliably.

Poor for me also (tall also). I didn't have any issues with it functioning but ended up selling it off as it was uncomfortable and I found disassembly cumbersome compared to a normal collapsing stock. It was a hit with people when I brought it out to play (but that may have been from the fireballs shorty's can throw).

Nice guns!

The stock doesn't affect functioning at all. In fact it works great with 300 Blackout as well as 556.

Ergos are not as good as a full length stock but then this is not a full length stock. Cheek weld is ok it just takes a bit of getting used to. The trick is to place your head further forward then you'd normslly do. I am 6'2" and don't have any problems using this stock. The short bbl combined with shortened stock makes for an incredibly compact carbine with loads of oomph at the muzzle.

I have to agree with Suputin. Im 6'2" as well and i get decent cheek weld by moving my head forward a bit. Its kind of like shooting with a standard stock collapsed.
Here is mine

Not natural.

Actually quite natural as long as you remember the defined role of the PDW, if you spent a lot of time on a MP5 your eye placement is right up against the rear sight. None of the LE/MIL end users have expressed any concerns, granted it does take some education to explain the stock & it's use. Currently I have about 15,000rds plus through two of these PDW platforms, it runs at about 830/840 rpm with the 7.5 barrel & add a suppressor it gets a bit more exciting.

*PDW's are a special niche weapons platform, they will not be replacing standard carbines anytime soon*

I guess when you don't have any original ideas you just steal them from others ........ :(

(Just to be clear, I am referring to Troy and not you)

I'm pretty sure Troy and NEA are in business... In previous Shot-Show press (can't place the year) I distinctly remember a Troy rep talking about the companies affiliation with NEA, this was when NEA first released VZ 858 components. Personally I never understood why NEA products are sold under the Troy Industries brand, it creates a much larger market to sell goods, but NEA gives up its ability to build brand recognition around its innovations and designs.
This is according to my memory which unfortunately is completely fallible.

NEA is NOT in business with Troy. NEA showed the stock to Troy, who promptly ripped it off and has refused to pay for the design.
