Chinese M14 stock is dishwasher safe!

Now that I’ve got my GI fiberglass stock I thought I’d start messing around with the Chinese wood. Why burn it?

I used up two cans of Easy Off oven cleaner and then threw the whole smelly mess in the dishwasher.

It came out completely stripped but still has to dry a little. The dishwasher also got out a lot of the dings that it came with.

I’ll let it dry and then work it with some steel wool.

I’m going to stain it (Minwax English Chestnut) and then Tung-oil it. From there on in will get treated with boiled Linseed Oil for maintenance.

This is the first time I’ve redone a stock. You guys think I’m on the right track?

I’ll post pictures when I’m done.

What kind of dish detergent you guys using?

Electrosol tablets.

You guys must have smaller dishwashers because mine fits fine with the top rack out. I can’t see taking the bottom rack out as being a problem so long as you keep the drying element away from the wood.

Mine was hot as hell when I took it out. I think it was the "Sanitize" cycle, after the "dry" cycle, that got it sooooo hot.

It's funny but my wife isn't the kind of gal to give a crap about this sort of thing (even with a newish dishwasher).

I also use the toaster oven to bake parts. So long as I clean up when I'm done I can stay in the good books.
:D

All I will say is you are one LUCKY bastard ... does she have a sister that happens to be single ? :D

Seems like all i got in the house is the Cascade dry powdered detergent...should work fine though. It's not like I will be all heartbroken if I ruin the stock...lol

I did all three of my M14's + the 3 pistols in the dishwasher. Stripped all the metal down to it's parts and did them first. Used the two part Electrosol pellets. Oil, cosmo, whatever, all gone and the parts dried themselves from the heat. Oiled, greased and reassembled everything while the stocks were cooking. They came out oiless, stainless and slightly feathered. After sanding they were smooth as silk. After drying they were stained and tung oiled (for ####s and giggles). Ran the machine through a cleansing cycle with nothing in it, except the pellets again, the third time. No smell, stains, nothing. Trap and filter are clean as a whistle. Every gun that needs a detailed cleansing is going this route from now on, so long as the Ministry of the Enviroment doesn't come knocking for all the stuff that's heading for the sewer:D

Yeah, she's like 18 though. LOL

I also ran the dishwasher again with two tablets and an empty load. Clean as a whistle and not even a trace, or odor, of the original brown oily goo.

I opened it twice to see what was sitting in the bottom of the dishwasher and it was brown sludge and smelt like the original stock.

What do they oil these stocks with, Cosomoline?

I think you guys are sometimes off your rocker.....but i just got a new m14s from dark international 2 weeks ago and it was still in the box covered in grease ans the wife is away for a few days to her mothers.......so......what a perfect time to dirty up the dishwasher, just stuck in the action and barrel, mags X3, butplate.....the works. 2 tabs- on the pots and pans setting with heat.......away we go ..let you know how it comes out. ...lol !! (My wife would kill me if she could see this....) cant stop giggling !

It workes great, came out greasefree and very clean, just sprayed the wholething down with some aerosol rem-oil and greased the action.....Im impressed!!!................try it

i rinsed mine under the hot water in the sink, came out looking like crap, waited till it dried came back rubed some steel wool on it and now its the perfect color. very little work. dishwasher wasnt a option for me, its no, no and no

I've been told.;)
Gun parts + dishwasher/bathtub = sleep on couch.

SWMBO told me I had to go buy a parts washer. Fine by me.:dancingbanana:

If you're going to do it in the dishwasher, add a lot of whatever soap you are going to use. The type of soap isn't going to matter much.

A surfactant is a surfactant.

Even if I did have a dishwasher, I would never use it for anything but dirty dishes...

I'm sure you guys know just how nasty some of the chemicals that are used to clean and lube gun parts can be. Same for the stuff in the stocks. I can't believe some people acually put recievers and barrels in there too.... are you guys nuts? Doesn't having lead in your dishwasher worry you at all?

Your wives are right to put you on the couch.

I did the bathtub, dishwashing detergent and scrub-pad treatment. The stock is crap to begin with (bits and pieces came off it all the time, bet I could have reduced the gun to metal only using my fingernail) and I throw some linseed oil on it from time to time. Getting rid of the cosmo smell was the big thing pour moi.

I put mine in the dishwasher a few months back....turned out great, just put it in as it came to me and it came out totally stripped and almost dent free. then i just put a bit of oil on it and vola!

We never did hear anything more about the 18-yr old sister? Does she like guns? Does she hunt? Does she tolerate outrageous male behaviour? Have you taken her to the range?

(Only asking on behalf of the shy single guys.)
