Moose rifle?

I'd go with a bolt if I was going to buy a new gun. That's what I used on the moose I got. Thompson center venture in 30-06.

I'm not really a fan of semi-autos, but I have to say, the old guy that owns the camp I hunt from has an old remington 742 in .308... I take it to the range every year for him before deer season... Friggin' thing will pretty much make 3-shot clover leafs all day, and in all the years he has had it, it's never jammed. I also have to mention that the gun has never been completely apart for a cleaning.

I personally shoot a savagge 99 in 308. My moose deer and elk gun. If it's strictly bush hunting Id pay for the carbine version of the 99. It's shorter and nicer or a carbine in a browning BLR.

The average Rem 7600 pump is probably more accurate out of the box than the average bolt rifle. It has a free floated barrel. It also has a removable magazine. Many bolt rifles do not.

It would take it any day over a semi.

And 308 wouldn't be my first or even my tenth choice for a moose rifle. But if I had to use a 308 I would use the Modern Hunter from ATRS just to give the locals palpitations.

If you were going to choose a moose rifle in .308, what would it be? A pump action, bolt , or a lever? I have a lever and a semi, but want a third.

If you'd bought the bolt first You would never have bought the others. Many animals that weren't intended to come home with me did because of how quick and silently I could drop one in

It would be hard to beat a Remmy 7600 in .35 Whelen for moose medicine, but that being said, if I was going to use a weirdo caliber expressly for mooses, it would be 9.3 in CZ 550. Heavy bullets, just 'cuz.

My choice would be a break action but in a 25-06 or 280... .308 is lots but why not go a bit bigger? Or smaller for that matter with a 7-08? All will take a moose inside a couple hundred yards with a decent bullet if you put it where it belongs.

I prefer Ruger No.1's for hunting, but they are an acquired taste... a bolt action would be my second choice, in your flavour of .30 cal... can't go wrong with a .30/06 or .300 WM.

I disagree somewhat with the pump being more accurate than a bolt gun. Although it has free floated barrel. Pump guns typically have crummy triggers and makes them more difficult to shoot accurately. Just that has been my experience.
