500, ambidextrous safety, release right at the trigger guard.
I bought the Mossberg flex with 14" barrel. It's based on the 500. You can put on different fore-grips, and stocks. I then bought a Mossberg 590 28" threaded barrel and it goes right on.
Shoots like a dream, and I could shoot clays even with the 14" barrel. I mainly bought the 28" for those pesky gooses (I know).
I've also heard/read a lot that Remingtong's build quality has gone down hill in the last 10 years.
Funny you mention the safety, because thats the one thing I dont like as much. I have small hands, and find the tang safety is hard to reach. I have to partially let go of the gun and sort of twist my hand upwards to reach it... This isn't a problem with tang-safety rifles like my Axis or friends' X-bolt though.
I have a Maverick 88, which is a 500 with a different trigger group and safety, (safety is a crossbolt on the trigger guard) which Im very happy with.
Winchester SXP .
I find the built quality better for the price.
What do you want to do with your shotgun?
Find a mossberg 500 or 535 3 barrel combo for about 600 bucks you'll get 28" std bead, 24" turkey with fibre optic sights and turkey choke. And a fully rifled cantilever, along with full, mod, and IC chokes. You can kill every critter in North America with that one gun battery! I fricken love mine. Traded in my Winchester 1300. Best decision I've ever made! Killed deer, hammered turkey's and downed ducks and geese. The rifle barrel will put 3 shots into 4" bullseye everyday with hornady SST's
