Who runs 308 in there norc m14?

I just recently sold my last m14, but I have had many over the years and have fired more .308 hunting rounds through them than I could count. I have never had a problem. I kept them 165 grain and less though.

hey guys. Just wondering if the norc m14 is safe to run 308. I've heard it's a 762 gun but mine is stamped 308win. Reason I ask is that I'm sitting on a way more 308 ammo than I am 762 and well, ammo ain't cheap. Thanks ya'll

I've been shooting Federal Powershok 150gr off the shelf .308 for over a decade in norinco M14/m305 rifles.
Was also the only ammo I used for proof and test firing customer builds.
The general rule is as long as your .308 ammo falls between 147 gr and 174gr. 180's are a NO GO.
Some folks use lighter than 147gr but I've got no advice there

I shoot mostly norc ammo (147gr) in mine and it hits 6 inches below bulleyes at 50. Interestingly enough with Sellier & Belliot 168 gr match grade ammo My POI is on the bulleyes at 50M. I feel a bit more recoil but there is no problem at all the gun cycles great.

I'm sure you'll have no issues shooting commercial 308 or 7.62mm rounds in your rifle. The real issue is 7.62mm ammunition in "tight" 308 chambers and all of the commercial M14 type rifles are chambered to account for it. This is a hotly contested topic here but the real experts warn against it. I don't include myself in that group but I've done my share of reading on it.

My advice is to smack the palm of your right hand abruptly against the forehead of anyone who argues the safe interchangeability of 7.62 and 308 or 5.56 and 223 for that matter.

oh no you di'int.
Now you're gonna get all the nitpickers warning you of the dangers of catastrophic explosions and super-nova if you mix the different ammo in their rifles. Even though I haven't had any issues in the thousands of mixed ammo I've used, nor anyone I know.

Federal 150 gr powershock off the shelf from CT here in town. No problems,
relatively cheap, good supply and no hiccups. Regards 375rum

doesn't really matter as long as you stay around the 147-150gr loads, as 45acpking said. don't use the heavier loads or you'll wreck your operating rod.

No such thing as a Norc M-14, but a real Winchester semi'd M-14(evil thing that it is) has no issues with commercial or reloaded .308.

In Jerry Kuhnhausen's book "The U.S. 30 Caliber Gas Operated Service Rifles" He is quite clear on this. But what would he know he's only the published expert of what is considered the best book on the subject? You two on the other hand are a self anointed experts.

So your Norinco with the 0.010" over sized chamber is no problem. Neither is a USGI M14. In fact you won't buy an off the shelf M14 type with a SAMMI minimum chamber. But if your chamber is cut to 1.630" you are taking your chances. That is unless you are Sure your rounds are under that.

It is pretty widely recognized that 1.632" chamber is the starting point for using BOTH 7.62 brass and .308 brassed ammo. On the other end, it is recommended to not use .308 brassed ammo in a chamber over 1.640"
But it depends which "expert" you ask LOL

I run the Norc surplus 7.62x51 147 (i think) grain as well as Winchester, Remington, Federal .308 with no problems. I do try to keep the .308 bullet weights around 165 if I can help it. I have heard the heavier ones such as 180-185 are harder on the gun? Either way no problems with either one. I love these guns.
