The Changing Face/Fads of AR-15 Ownership

With the advent of this thread & the traditional/old-school look being touted, I wonder if everyone will start building or go back to M4A1 clones now?

Haha, just made me think how fashion trendy ARs have been through the years. If I had the money, I'd keep one of every style, you know, start my own AR Museum collection.

I miss being able to take mine out to play wherever I liked.
I had a Colt Sporter Match H-BAR back in '91 or so.
We used to go to the gravel pits or out in the field and plink and shoot varmints.
There were few around then, and fewer fads. The carry handle didn't even come off, the scope was way up high.
I traded it for a 700 Varmint Synthetic in .308 when they went restricted, I couldn't bear the thought of not being to take it out in the field.

I'd forgotten about those...nice reminder. But keymod comes to mind right now

Keymod will only be replaced with something similar like m-lok. It has too much utility/flexibility to be thrown out. Basically, it allows you to run very light, but if you need to tack on some accessories like offset sights for competition or flashlight in case you're an operating operator operational in operations (or wanna be one), you can just add a short length of rail, thus making the weight gain minimal.

So what did I do? I went back the basics of what got me into ARs back in the early 80s before everyone got into complicated ARs. I think what tipped me away from the new stuff was the flood of numerous Chinese ARs.

Took me sometime but I went back to a carry handle, simple pistol grip, pinned 20 round mag, 6 hole skinny handguards, metal sliding stock, simple muzzle brake, and simple sling.

All I can say is I just love the light easy handling back to basics old school CAR15. I have many people asking about this old girl and man does it group well with 55 grain Norinco ammo.

Randy

Randy I like that retro cool 'Nam look. Yep, reminds me of simpler days back in the 80's.

I plan on keeping mine simple, ambi controls, a light, a red dot, flip up iron sights, and a sling. The less that can go wrong the better. I live by the KISS rule.

lol So like tactical gadget mounts in between the tactical gadget mount rails?!
Oh man....
I'm going to go fondle my bare bones Model 653 clone lol ;)

I really dont understand it or I can explain it.. Those floating shelves you buy got a hole and a slot. You put the screw into the wall place sheves over into the big hole and in and down into the slot. Guess Keymod works like that... Push in, pullforward and tighten the screw to lock.

Most keymod tubes are just one rail running along the top (if any).. So they are pretty light, skinny and minimalistic. They give you the option of adding more rails if needed (useful for us action shooters) but only where you need them instead of having the added weight/bulk of a quadrail setup. I don't own one (got Troy alpharail which is similar) but I see the utility value

Well explained. The advantage of keymod are lightweight, modular and free float. Personally I don't like quad rails, but I understand that picatiny are the industry standard for now. With keymod I have a lightweight package with the ability to mount anything from picatiny to keymod accessories.

Someone already mentioned it...my guilty pleasure "want" in an AR? A fully decked out AR in an A.R.M.S. S.I.R. Heavy as hell, but all those rails, cool scallops and cut outs looked so High Speed - Low Drag to my naive eyes. I'll admit it, if I came across one for a steal I'd probably snap it up just for nostalgia. :)

I dunno by I still think the redi mag system is COOL.

some fads
Mag couplers, bad levers, 3point sling, offset buis,

Well... Mag couplers have their uses and so do offset buis in action shooting.. Offset buis allow the shooter to quickly engage short-range targets while the scope is set to reach out since adding a small dot instead of running the irons puts you in open division. I'm not a big fan of LAR mag couplers but I got one for my Black Dog mags to run rimfire matches as I can run a stage of any size with what's in hand and it's very quick to reload since my hand is already in that workspace instead of having to reach down to my belt and get a mag in and in action shooting split-seconds count. Just ask this oldtimer
