Gents: Recommend me a quality "black rifle" in any calibre other than 223 or 308.

My budget is not cast in stone, but I believe I might have my choices down to two front runner contenders:
9mm Thureon Defense
9mm Beretta CX-4 Storm
However, still looking and weighing options... and no I don't require a pink unicorn for good luck!
:)

No's for sure to Vz-58, Ruger mini 14/30, Kriss V, M1 carbine (*** though I love the 30 Carbine cartridge), FN PS-90, and Browning BAR.

I have some of the finest non-refurbished SKS's around... trust me I'm a huge fan. There's no interest in a mall ninja'd SKS in my collection. These more than adequately serve my X39 needs.

... my only concern around the vz is durability. I've seen more than a few threads where there's been issues with the bolts.

I have one, and its in rough shape lots of rough use.
True they had problems with the gas ports being to big
I blew up my bolt to. But they fixed that on the new ones.

They are great rifles. Mine has seen probably 1000 rds after it was fixed
And no problems

I've been tempted to buy another beretta cx4 storm again, since the non restricted versions are now more common. I used to have a .40 s&w in the restricted version and I really liked it. I don't think I could buy one in 9mm now though. I think a non restricted kriss would be cool ... .45 acp and an awesome design

SKS $200-300, upgrade the stock to a Tapco, ATI, or Archangel (archangel would be my pref) for $100-200, throw a wartak rail on it for an optic, get the mag adapter for accepting the Rob Arms 10rd 7.62x39 mags, done. You now have a semi-auto updated military grade black rifle for which ammo is extremely easy and cheap to get.

Now if you had the $2400+ dollars to spend, I'd tell you to just get an XCR with the 7.62x39 conversion kit. Which is what I have along with the 5.56mm kit as well and I love it.

If you browse over the OP's signature block, you'll see a link to his photo album where he has numerous SKSs already.

After all the black rifle intrigue, and after spending several weeks handling, researching, and testing several of your suggestions, ranging in price from $1400 and $4500 (no lie!)... I have come to the stark conclusion that I am not a black rifle kind of guy! :)
The only rifles that sparked my interest, in the end, ironically, were an M1 Garand! and a CX-4 Storm.
I am still looking forward to testing an M4 Tactical shotgun, but that discussion belongs in another forum! :)

CX-4 is not a bad choice.... Stock sights are good, accurate out to 75m, easy to find parts, and well within your budget. I hear some guys can reach out a little farther than 75m with handloads. That would be my choice based on your criteria...
